Well, because we like to compare Star Trek fictional culture to real country in our world. So let's me join your club 
Alright, My topic is Dominion. Why Dominion? Because Dominion is interesting race that has been compared as German in WWII or any other countries that were enemies to United States in the past. But let me tell you this
Just think about this comparation :
UFP (United Federation of Planets) is a major power in Alpha Quadrant. Although their power is comparable to Klingon and Romulan, but in story wise, they are stronger than both of their rivals races. So, in another word is, UFP is the dominant power in both Alpha and Beta Quadrant / a Super Power Nation.
But, although Super Power, UFP is pasifist. They hate to conquer the another planet with force. Rather than that, they choose a peace approach. Instead of conquering, they come to ask the native of a planet to join their cause. That's why UFP is considered as the utopia of Humanity.
In the eyes of fans (or even writers) they are the alter ego of U.S.A / NATO, because UFP is the only multi cultural / species in both Alpha & Beta Quadrant.
But, what about Dominion?
Dominion is a dominant Faction in Gamma Quadrant. They are founded by the Founder and has multiple species in their faction. Although we have only see Founder, Jem'Hadar and Vor'ta in DS9, but the three of them are just the most dominant species in the Dominion Caste.
Unlike UFP, Dominion is agressive. Their first priority is to bring order to the gamma Quadrant. That's why they use everything necessary to do that. Including Diplomacy approach or even conquering. But, Dominion is not Klingon who prefer to taste their enemy blood in battle, Borg who want to assimilate other species, Cardassia who what the enemy resource. Dominion do that in order to bring order in the Quadrant. So, they can do anything to archieve that. Including Peace talking or even friendly approach (just look at Bajor who sign Non Aggresive treaty with Dominion).
So, if you compare both of UFP and Dominon, you can find some interesting here :
1. Both of them are multi species faction in Star Trek, although their government method is different.
2. Both of them are dominant faction in the Quadrant.
3. Both of them are using word "peace" to approach another species.
4. Both of them are not alergic with diplomacy treaty
But, their intention is different.
So, because of those similar approach of these two factions, I can say that Dominion in realty is the UFP Mirror Image. In other word is Dominion is the darkside of UFP. If UFP comes with no hidden agenda, Dominion come with hundreds of them. IF UFP added the other species to work together as unity, Dominion added other species for their own interest (note that Dominion didn't conquer Cardassia or even Bajor. They just make Cardassia as the member of Dominion).
Because of that, I can say if United Federation of Planet is U.S.A / NATO in light paths, Dominion is the U.S.A / NATO in dark paths. So in reality, the dominion war is not about U.S.A battling German or U.S.S.R, but battling to themselves. It is the battle for the future of United States of America. Will U.S.A, as the dominant / super power nation in the world grow as a peace keeping and do gooder just like UFP or use their power / influence to push their interest to the other nations just like Dominion.
