Dominators, Meglos on DVD in US yet?

Have the DVDs of The Dominators and Meglos come out in the US yet? As I recall, they were supposed to be out earlier this month, but Netflix doesn't have them, and they're usually pretty quick about these things. Just wondering -

Can't answer as to Netflix availabilty, I don't Netflix :alienblush:

I bought both of these at Barnes and Noble. I used the buy two get one free and also got "The Space Museum/The Chase" as well. Unfortunately, only Barnes and Noble seem to get Doctor Who these days so the pricing is not the best unless they have a good sale going on.

I find Doctor Who releases to be a bit hit and miss here in Canada. Often they might take a few weeks to finally arrive, or they'll only order in one copy per store, and no more. I haven't seen either of these releases in the stores yet, but I know they're out. If I really want them I'll order them via Amazon, but fortunately neither story ranks among my favorites so I'm in no rush.

^^In Nova Scotia the classic era Doctor Who DVD new releases are consistently one week after the advertised date for the US. I've had The Dominators and Meglos for over a week now, though I've only had the chance to watch The Dominators.

I bought both of these at Barnes and Noble.

I highly recommend you save yourself some money and never, ever buy a DVD at Barnes and Noble again.

Amazon.com is almost always cheaper.

Of course, if you need an immediate fix, obviously spend your money as you see fit.

Actually, with their coupons and recent buy two get one free sale on top of membership discount, I did well.

The first time, I got The Dominators, Meglos, and The Space Museum/The Chase for around $50 (or the price of The Space Museum/The Chase by itself).

Last weekend, I got Battlefield, City of Death, and The Creature From The Pit for around $40 (or just $5 higher than Battlefield by itself).

I get coupons all the time from Barnes and Noble and can shop wisely there and save money.

Just to update my comment earlier, the two have shown up in Best Buy here in Canada now. They were just a little slow - or they only ordered one or two copies and they got sold, which is possible. I'm hearing tell of friends having trouble finding Season 3 of Sarah Jane at retail, too.

how is the quality of the show on DVD? any clearing up of snowy lines and such? sometimes old B/W looks crass and crackles.. how is the sound? what are the features?

I was at Barnes & Noble last night and was really tempted to pick up "The Dominators." It should be a no-brainer considering Troughton is my favorite Doctor. However, I'm trying to hold off because there are still a bunch of other classic stories I own that I haven't watched yet (including "The War Games" & a bunch of Jon Pertwees that I got for Christmas). Still, between that & the recent U.S. release of the 1996 Paul McGann movie, a trip to Barnes & Noble or Fry's Electronics is a serious test of my willpower. (I did indulge myself a little bit by spending $30 on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer "Season 8" motion comic.)

The DVDs have much better image quality than the broadcast versions/VHS/streaming versions. Basically, they're cleaned up and restored. Some of the older stuff that was shot originally on video, but only preserved on film (or something like that) has been given a video-like appearence with technology called "Vidfire". I think the only non-Vidfired title is Tomb of the Cybermen, which is going to change since a new special edition is being released.

There are minor touch-ups sometimes, like a extremely wobbly background at the beginning of Caves of Androzani that was removed. However the original FX are mostly left alone, although certain releases have the option of updated FX (Although not quite up to Nuwho quality). But it's more like say, Star Trek remastered rather than Star Wars special edition changes.

There does seem to be a considerable delay with certain classic WHO releases on Netflix, unfortunately. Also certain titles are no longer being available on Blu-ray (Such as season 5). I think this might be because Netflix is trying to become more of a streaming company than a DVD rental one.

The key word is OPTION. The reason you don't hear purists like me complaining about this is because in every case so far you can either watch the original broadcast version or the version with the new SFX. They made the mistake with a "Trek Remastered"-style The Five Doctors back in the 1990s and fandom screamed. So they made it right when they put both versions out on DVD a couple years ago. There's a rumor that Day of the Daleks might only available with the planned upgraded SFX but I doubt it.

excellent!:techman: Thanks Whofan! great info.. I think I may wait then and get the special edition of the tomb of the cybermen..as for the rest, I would love to get the "restored" editions.. since I am more about getting the episodes as the directors intended, the addition of "FIXED" special effects, and minor touch ups intrigues me..

some are purists and do not want their classic who changed, but my point of view on that subject is simply that since technology has improved, and can now be used to make the original show even better then why not? why not make the episode what the director intended, but was limited to by the technology of that day?

so is there a list of classic who episodes that details the "fixes" and specifics about what was done to the classic episodes??

as for The Borgified Corpse, I don't want to break your bank ole' chap, but I highly recommend getting as much troughton in as possible and watching it in order.. before watching the "war Games" trust me, it will enrich the experience..

I watched them that way, though I do not own them on dvd..

the cool thing about most of the classic series hartnell and troughton, is that each episode led into another.. and so on.. it was like one big story..but try to take in as much troughton as you can.. I do love him as the doctor..

Boy I tell you what, it really puts into perspective how precious the 2nd doctor who episodes are, and that we got lucky with the dominators, Krotons, tomb of the cybermen, and war games..

I am still saddened by the fact that the evil of the daleks, and other cybermen episodes are missing, not to mention an all time favourite of mine..the Abominable snowmen..

I hope Moffat gets us some more yeti, high intelligence, monk action..

No need. I already own & have watched "The Tomb of the Cybermen," "The Mind Robber," "The Invasion" (best classic Who ever!), & "The Seeds of Death" multiple times. I've also seen "The War Games" before on VHS. I just haven't gotten around to cracking open the DVD yet. (I'm currently cycling through the early Peter Davison years.) What about "The Krotons"? Any word on that yet?

Personally, the lost Troughton story I'd most like to see recovered is "The Enemy of the World." The lone surviving episode makes it look like an interesting concept and I'd love to see Troughton in a double-role.

I have no news on the Krotons, but I would love to get some of those dvd's.. how is the Invasion? did they do well with the fillers for the missing episodes? animation, or stills??

as for the enemy of the world, I need to read up on that one..sounds intriguing from what you say..

but like I said.. abominable snowmen.. yeti.. Robotic soldiers of a high intelligence, what a unique and under used enemy. I wish they could find the rest of that serial..

The replacement episodes are animation and are so cool that you'll instantly begin demanding that the BBC replace all of the missing episodes this way! One of the best things about them is that they're not confined to the limited set-ups of a BBC 1960s TV budget. In some ways, the animated episodes are much more stylish & cinematic than their live-action counterparts.

But there is a trade-off. The animators don't do a particularly good job of capturing the nuances of Patrick Troughton's & Frazier Hines' performances. And they're so much of what makes the Patrick Troughton years one of my favorite eras of Doctor Who.
