Dollhouse S1 recap thread, discussion, DVD set and unaired episode.

Re: Dollhouse S1 recap thread, discussion, DVD set and unaired episode

I just finished watching Season 1.

I must say I like this show and episode 13 was a very nice surprise.
I'm looking forward to season 2.

Re: Dollhouse S1 recap thread, discussion, DVD set and unaired episode

I just got a chance to watch the the fabled pilot and episode 13, and all I can say is I hope that Joss gets and HBO or Shotime deal, after he's had a nice paid vacation to recharge his batteries.

I hope we can get at least two more seasons of Dollhouse, as the pilot and finale show that a lot of thought has been put into creating an arc-based show exploring some very interesting ideas about identity, and the future of man-machine relations. I wish I could sit down with P.K. Dick and get his reaction to the show. This from a guy who couldn't get into Buffy, until a friend forced me to watch Angel... but it was Firefly that hooked me into giving Wheadonvese shows a try.

And Joss, keep casting the hotties. I, for one, think you've got excellent taste in women.

Re: Dollhouse S1 recap thread, discussion, DVD set and unaired episode

I really hope this show can last for a few more seasons. I'd hate to see this become another Firefly (the show was great; I mean the premature cancellation).

Joss' biggest mainstream hit so far was Buffy, which managed 7 seasons. Everything since has been somewhat cult and underground. I'm not saying that's a bad thing. IMO Joss works so much better on TV. As long as the network stays out of his way, he produces great stuff.

Re: Dollhouse S1 recap thread, discussion, DVD set and unaired episode

Is this show worth a blind buy? I have seen Buffy and Angel in their entirety and loved both and thought Firefly was good but not as good as the previous two shows mentioned.

Re: Dollhouse S1 recap thread, discussion, DVD set and unaired episode

Rent first, if possible. I'm not really sure of its rewatchability. The first half of the first season was so network-tampered-with that it almost killed the show. The second half IS pretty goof, though. You have to decide if you want to spend the money for six decent episodes and six fair-to-crappy ones.

Re: Dollhouse S1 recap thread, discussion, DVD set and unaired episode

^Six plus two exclusive unaired episodes. ;)

Re: Dollhouse S1 recap thread, discussion, DVD set and unaired episode

^^^
IMO, its got rewatchability. I've rewatched mine already. In regards to the first six's quality its not that they are bad, I think 'fair' is accurate but imo none of those first six are crappy. They also get a notch better when you rewatch them cause you know where everything is going and some dialoge seems now to be foreshadowing since your aware of the endgame and Epitaph One.

Now I have a curiosity question.

Joe Hearn, Sierra's handler, who was caught secretly raping her was killed by Millie(aka November). Adelle sent him to kill Millie for redemption, or so Joe might have thought. He was shown the target as Millie so my question is this.

Wouldn't Joe have known Millie was a Doll/Active? Knowing this wouldn't he then suspect Adelle wasn't serious about his redemption? We know other Handlers were aware of each other and to which Doll they were assigned so he likely would recognize Millie as an Active.

Did he, Joe, then:
A)Knowing it was a trap did he think killing her might still win him some redemption?
B)Cause November was out of the Dollhouse living as Millie is it possible he didn't know Millie was an Active?

Also, Amazon.com right now has Dollhouse for $29.99 with free shipping. That is lower by 8% than it was the week of release. It would make each episode, 14 in total, just over $1 so not a bad deal even as a blind buy. I don't know how long Amazon will keep it at this price.

Re: Dollhouse S1 recap thread, discussion, DVD set and unaired episode

I don't think Joe knew she was an active any more than we did.
I LOVED that scene. I was only just beginning to think she was a doll before that scene, then when we heard the "kill code" come over the phone I got a big smile.

Re: Dollhouse S1 recap thread, discussion, DVD set and unaired episode

Yeah, when Mellie opened the door and he attacked her, I was all like: "Aw, geeze, I can't watch this. It's gonna be Jenny Calendar all over again."

And then Adelle called. :techman:

Really one of the most outstanding moments of the show so far.

Yes, I may be zombifying this thread but I just watched this last night with Joss' commentary.

During the fight scene prior to this between Ballard and Echo, Joss - without a hint of irony - says that he and Mike Massa (their stunt co-ordinator - used to work on Angel too) wanted to ensure that the fight was not too much like one from Buffy - where both combatants do extraordinary things because they're Slayers, Vampires, Demons etc. In this case, we've got two regular humans so they shouldn't be able to do that.

Sorry Joss but  for that comment alone. If the fight was not supposed to be like one from Buffy, how come the tiny girl wins ?

It's then followed up with him saying how his wife watched the episode and how uncomfortable the next scene with Mellie made her to the point where he had to ask her to trust him as she was about to turn it off. He and his wife were uncomfortable with the violence being shown despite having cheerfully watched the previous scene.

He also comments on the scene where Langton saves Sierra earlier in the episode, complaining that he was unhappy with Langton using violence to save a woman from other violence. It's a regular feature of Joss' commentaries that he criticises himself for using what he considers to be cliches.

Re: Dollhouse S1 recap thread, discussion, DVD set and unaired episode

Well, Mellie won the fight 'cause she had an experienced, trained assassin download. The other guy just thought he was tough, and she took him by surprise.

Re: Dollhouse S1 recap thread, discussion, DVD set and unaired episode

^I can understand Mellie beating Hearn more than I can Echo beating Ballard.

How was Ballard introduced ? He was shown practicing with a similarly sized man and winning. What happened over the next few episodes ? He pushed Victor (who is not exactly small) around like he was nothing. He beat up three large men after being shot. Then, earlier in the same episode he took out all of Joel Mynor's security guards. This is no weakling, Ballard is as hard as nails.

Training doesn't over come physical restrictions. If Joss wants a realistic fight he's got to understand that if someone Tahmoh Penikett's size punches someone Eliza Dushku's size as hard as he can in the face, she'll be lucky if she doesn't end up in a coma.

Mellie I can understand because she took Hearn by surprise. He wasn't expecting her to be able to fight back and she used the first available opportunity to kill him.

Let's put it this way - there's a reason why boxing, MMA and most other fighting sports have weight and gender restrictions. You're not going to see Brock Lesnar vs Gina Carano at UFC 102 no matter how skilled Carano is.

Re: Dollhouse S1 recap thread, discussion, DVD set and unaired episode

I've loaned my DVD set to a friend but am eager to get them back and watch some episodes with commentary. Especially the pilot and Epitaph One.

Regarding this I believe its just where you have to accept you are watching a sci-fi show and go with the unbelievable. Not that Millie is a "small/tiny" girl. I don't mean that in a deragatory, she just isn't, not Eliza or Sierra tiny.

In Buffy you accept it quicker cause she is enhanced with this mythic quality that allows "tiny girl" to win. Your allowing logic to interferre with your fantasy when Echo beats Ballard. By using the logic of weight to mass and height vs #'s being fought there is no reason River should beat a bar full of men or rabid Reavers, she does. Because like Echo her training(as non mystic as it is) supposodly allows for that.

That's the other thing that bugged me. Joss referred to Miracle Laurie as "homely". I'm sorry, Miracle Laurie is one word beginning with H and it's not "homely". To give you another clue, it ends in "ot".

In Buffy I can buy it, Buffy is superhuman. That's fine with me. Echo, however, is not. She's just a normal woman with artificially implanted training. River is just the same, but I feel it's worse here because Ballard is not some drunk in a bar or a insane Reaver, it has been clearly shown that he practices this.

Ultimately, all drama requires the suspension of disbelief, but this is just daft and makes me think less of the show and less of Joss as a writer.

Joss always calls his female cast homely on commentaries, it's just one of his running gags.

can anyone tell me which eps have commentraries? I only listened to the Epitaph One, in which Jed and Maurissa also call Felicia Day "homely"...

Re: Dollhouse S1 recap thread, discussion, DVD set and unaired episode

...and if you watch the Dr. Horrible DVD, you'll see that Jed and Maurissa love Felicia Day right to death and would never insult her. :)

I've noticed. However, with Miracle Laurie it seems to be the first thing that comes up every time anyone talks about her.

Only three. "Ghost" has Joss Whedon and Eliza Dushku, "Man on the Street" has just Joss and "Epitaph One" has Joss and Maurissa Tancharoen as you know.

OK, I just listened and I have to say wtf are you on about, he says "homely, I'm using my finger quotes here" or something along those lines. So it's fairly obvious he's saying "only in TV/Movies would someone say she is"

Re: Dollhouse S1 recap thread, discussion, DVD set and unaired episode

^I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, bearing in mind that from Buffy onwards I've always noticed his tendency to mumble through commentaries when he's on his own.

My point about Laurie stands, though. I've read waaaay too many interviews with her where here body shape comes up within the first few questions.

Re: Dollhouse S1 recap thread, discussion, DVD set and unaired episode

I'll give em credit for having a nice S2 poster. However, it looks like a poster for an Alias ripoff. I'd have absolutely no idea that this wasn't some kind of edgy spy show. Nice artwork or not, they really do need to communicate the actual content of the show and not sell people a product that is entirely different from the one they're buyin.
