Resistance is futile......

Lol. Pretty sure it’s a common hamster. An extremely well fed hamster.

Bumped into someone from the way back who recalled my brother sneaking her the family hamster because he hated it. We all did; it bit everyone. I felt guilty for years thinking it had escaped and been eaten by the cat (it’s cage was in my room - I’m a very sound sleeper and wasn’t bothered by it’s nocturnal scuffing about.)

That's the irony. Generally, people find hamsters cuter, but they are solitary creatures in nature and thus easily feel threatened and will "defend" themselves (read: bite people). Whereas many people revile rats, but being social creatures living in colonies, they tend to be more willing to be handled. The biggest physical difference? One has a cute "nub" of a tail, the other has a long, relatively hairless one. People tend to choose the critter with the "nubby" tail despite its often asocial behavior.

One time, while visiting a pet supply store which had white mice and rats in open top enclosures, curiosity tempted me to test this "socialization" trait. I reached my hand into the bin of some impressively large "lab" rats, gently touching a half dozing specimen. He didn't flinch; he didn't whirl around to bite. He merely raised his head to identify the source of physical contact and then stretched a bit for a different posture. I bet if it had been a hamster, he would have at least bolted for a far corner or a plastic enclosure of not outright "attack" my hand.

Rats do seem to make better pets; I’d not made the connection between the pack vs solitary animal. I have friends in real life who adore their ratties and they seem to be very affectionate. Hamsters are cute but I don’t think they’re good pets for most people. Tbh a lot of animals people keep as pets shouldn’t be kept as pets imho though.

I had a really cool hamster.
She didn't bite anyone.
She had a plastic clear ball the I would put her in and she'd go all over the house. But had to close the doors to the stairs so she wouldn't roll off down a flight a stairs.
She was a major escape artist. But I caught her before she got far.
