Doesn't Starfleet have any Phaser rifles in the 23rd Century?

When Kirk and Spock beamed onto the Romulan ship, I think it would have been cool to have seen sporting some real bad ass rifles. I remember them having some on the series Enterprise and that show took place almost 100 years before this new Star Trek movie did.

Maybe they were trying to make the movie more of a "real life" kind of thing (eg. the Chevy & the Motorcycle, the Nokia item, and modern music) none of the other Star Trek films had any of this in them, and I thought it was cool because it made it more "real life" like. It made you feel like everything was real...
