Does the Uhura twist mean we won't get a good pon farr storyline?

I honestly hope they never do another pon farr story again. I'm sick of it. Great shows came out of it initially, but it was done to death over the course of all the shows. Didn't Voyager have at least 3 pon farr episodes? If it's such a "private" thing for the Vulcans - let's keep it that way!

Voyager only did one episode and a B-story about it. I don't see how it pon farr would be bad since it would factor into alot of different things going on in the Abramsverse. The Spock/Uhura romance and the Vulcan race needing to rebuild it's society. I don't see them building a whole movie around the idea but it is something that should be a issue if your going to explore the Spock/Uhura romance.

Pon Farr stories are pretty annoying IMHO (particularly after Bermaga did them). Let's leave the subject lie and let the two characters date normally

Everyone knows Spock is much stronger, so Kirk would have to cheat, as usual. We need plenty of shirt-ripping, too. They have to do that at some point. :alienblush:

I finally saw the film last night and you've made me realize there was no shirt-ripping! I feel cheated. :(

Actually they had two. B'Elanna caught it from Vorik then a few years later Tuvok was able to resolve it with a hologram - talk about your missed dramatic opportunities.

From mate or die, to yet another holdec episode... one could loose the will to live.

Boy, could Pine use some shirt-ripping though. That lad was born for it...

Not to mention the one leg flying kick, and the shoulder roll - that shit by The Shat was hot. :D

with maybe just two more films there are other things i want them to spend their time on.
i mean we dont know how spock handled the rest of them in the prime universe.

now if they want to adress it in novels...

Pon Farr was cool in that TOS episode, but I noticed it's initial depection got thrown out the window, in particular in The Search For Spock.

There's going to be spoilers for ST: III The Search For SPock, I don't know how to hide them or anything but, basically I always found it weird that in both TOS and ENT Vulcans are described as being "linked" to their partner, but then all of a sudden Spock can have hand sex\foreplay with Savik on the Genesis planet? The movie just shows them playing with their hands, but then it cuts to a space fight scene, and space torpedos imply sex. Whenever I think of sex, I think of photon torpedos.

He was a new Spock, without any memories of previous links, yet. I think the link is important for marriage, but I believe Vulcans can find release in a pinch with whoever is nearby, to ensure survival. The hands link is how they form the link, and initiate activities - a bit like the Klingon bite, I suppose. He could just as easily make a new link with a meld - and even if he wasn't able to, his older partner could, I'm sure. I thought the plot there hung together extremely well without any problem.

I never understood the whole Pon Farr thing.

So for 7 years Vulcans don't need to "do it" and then they go in "Heat" and desperately need to do it or they risk death, then when they "get" it (I have yet to see any on screen Vulcan "get it". Usually it's more like they end up tricking their Brains into thinking they "got it").

I hope they ignore this part of "canon" completely as it doesn't make sense. How the hell do they keep a stable population if they only reproduce every 7 years?

no, they can reproduce any time they feel like it. it's "need" as opposed to "really, REALLY need". ;)

I never bought it that Vulcans only had sex during Pon Far. My theory was that it was a hormone storm that happened when the men were fertile every seven years.

Still sexually active the rest of the time but shooting blanks.

I don't think they shoot blanks. they just don't feel the enormous "heat" they feel during pon farr.

If they never make another mention of pon-farr in the movies, that's fine. We already had a pon-farr story (AMOK TIME). That covered it, thank you.

Or, he'll handle it the way Sarek handled pon farr while with a human woman. I don't find it hard to believe that him and T'Pring do not exist (haven't been betroved yet) or his rebellous nature wouldn't make him consider the betroval valid (since he hasn't yet and won't in this timeline try to out-Vulcan full Vulcans to please his dad).

This is a very simple offscreen solution... assuming him and Uhura are sexually active.

"Uhura, I have Pon Farr coming soon."
"What is that?"
"It's a period once every seven years where Vulcans become very fertile and our logic loses hold over our sexuality"
"Bullshit"
"Pulls out a remedial Pon Farr book"
2 mins of reading details
"Ok, I'll talk to Dr. McCoy and get ready"

That's not compelling drama...

Yeah, I don't see this relationship lasting.

Hopefully.

yeah, in fact, I took that recent Saldana jokey quote about Uhura and Kirk in the next movie as sort of a reference to a lack of future progress in this particular 'relationship' (Spock/Uhura). I don't think this will be a permanent thing. I think the "Main Seven" of the crew will all be "single" for the next movies. but I'm hoping it's not just swept under the rug. there's some fertile story material to be dealt with even in the demise of it.

I don't think the film series would continue to draw multiple segments of the audience without it, so I hope it continues, just not as an A plot. Continuing doesn't mean there won't be bumps in the road, though.
