Does the Uhura twist mean we won't get a good pon farr storyline?

Pon farr in Trek has always been a great plot, because it posed a real, and rather delicate challenge for the crew to solve. So, do you think the new twist with Uhura has possibly nixed this in the sequels? Not very gripping storytelling, if he's already paired...

Actually, if ya think about it, a pon farr storyline could give some good drama.

Spock gets the fever and decides he should hook up with a Vulcan survivor to keep the species goin'.

Spock gets the fever and the sudden bout of horniness scares the hell out of Uhura forcin' him to find a new partner.

Uhura breaks up with Spock to go after Kirk (as hinted at from the Saldana interview posted on TrekToday recently) and when Spock gets the fever, there's a dual to the death for her affection! McCoy will, of course, end the fight the same way, but will apply the hypo as a surprise from behind.

I bet that the day Spock gets the fever, there'll be a mile-long queue in front of his quarters. I also think many of us would be there, too.

Now THAT I'd like to see. :D

Everyone knows Spock is much stronger, so Kirk would have to cheat, as usual. We need plenty of shirt-ripping, too. They have to do that at some point. :alienblush:

ME: No officer, I did not molest that person.
Officer: That person has a name, and it's ZQ.
ME: WHAAAAaaaaat, I had no idea.
Offier: When you were done you wrote your name in the mess that was made.
ME: Ewwww. Nu uh.
Offier: ...
ME: I plead Pon Far!

On a slightly more serious note (unusual for me), I hope we see no revisits of TOS storylines. These guys only get a new movie every two or three years; let's see new stories.

...Yes, with a proper trek theme - I want to see sci-fi, not just more Romulan rehashing and big explosions. We want to see something peculiar that challenges how we view the universe. Isn't trek supposed to be about exploration and adventure? Bring back the science fiction element!

To be fair - I guess they had a major task in fleshing out the characters all over again in this timeline, and had to focus on that... but now, the door is open for adventure and "to explore strange new worlds" and "boldy go where no one has gone before"... makes the hairs at the back of my neck stand to think of what the sequels may have in store.

Uh, there will be no triangle. If one of the two main heroes has a relationship, they will keep the other relatively unencumbered. I can't see Pon Farr being a major aspect of any of the films, because it isn't something for the "crew" to solve, but something for Spock to solve. It's very, very personal. Besides, Zoe Saldana has no idea what the next film will be about.

As much as I think ZQ and Captain Fine ripping each other's shirts off would be hot, didn't we get enough of Spock choking Kirk in this movie?

Hey, the slash fiction is in another thread and s&m should be reserved for TNZ anyway.

I never understood the whole Pon Farr thing.

So for 7 years Vulcans don't need to "do it" and then they go in "Heat" and desperately need to do it or they risk death, then when they "get" it (I have yet to see any on screen Vulcan "get it". Usually it's more like they end up tricking their Brains into thinking they "got it").

I hope they ignore this part of "canon" completely as it doesn't make sense. How the hell do they keep a stable population if they only reproduce every 7 years?

Vulcans can have sex at anytime I think, they just really, really have to have sex every 7 years.

I also just wondered about something. How long does Pon-Far last? Vulcans might actually stay horny for a year or so. They keep doing it until a child is produced.

A good point that was brought up in the thread about the survival of the Vulcan species was that Vulcans have a very long life-span, so even if they did only reproduce once every seven years, they could be pretty prolific in terms of having children.

But I agree with Jason, they can probably have sex anytime.

I never bought it that Vulcans only had sex during Pon Far. My theory was that it was a hormone storm that happened when the men were fertile every seven years.

Still sexually active the rest of the time but shooting blanks.

I honestly hope they never do another pon farr story again. I'm sick of it. Great shows came out of it initially, but it was done to death over the course of all the shows. Didn't Voyager have at least 3 pon farr episodes? If it's such a "private" thing for the Vulcans - let's keep it that way!
