I love it. I really like all the edges and angles. Honestly I've never been much of a fan of Federation starship designs. I like this better.

The tragic thing is that it could be great. Each of the various components (hull, nacelles, neck and saucer) on their own show a fantastic design. Put together as they are the result is not as appealing.

The neck would go better with a more elongated saucer (a la the Intrepid or Sovereign), while the hull would look better with the current setup if it were bowed (either with outer ends slightly up or somewhat down). The hull would also look better if it were not as long. The "power" of a Starfleet design is in the nacelles and the saucer; the hull is there to connect the two. They could keep the hull as-is if they moved the neck back just a tad and enlarged the saucer.

If the creators want us to dislike the ship - brilliant.
If the creators thought we'd love it - tragic.
People who like it while the creators want us to dislike it - amusing.
People who hate it while the creators want us to love it - smart.

I'm tending to give the show the benefit of the doubt. I'm going for the first option.

Also remember that it's "crews." That means possibly that this ship is not the centerpiece, if there is a centerpiece at all. And they haven't actually said whose ship that is or what kind of crew is aboard. There are too many unknowns to make a judgement - other than "Ewww!" which was my honest first impression.

I would be so happy if the interior of the USS Discovery was based on the Planet of the Titans concept art as well.

Have been spending some time today doing these schematics. Obviously they'll be full of mistakes, all I had were the various angles from the teaser. There are many things I had to guess, like the exact form of the nacelles. But I think this is a good approximation of what the Discovery looks like in the teaser.

And what can I say, occupying myself with the Discovery for a day made me actually more appreciative of the design. I still think it needs a lot of work – especially the nacelles, which need to be higher, and the much too angular secondary hull – but I love the somewhat retro design of the saucer and some of the details are really nice.

The side view is very reminiscent of the Galaxy class, I think. Especially with that curved neck. The front view still looks very weird to me, though.

By the way, do we know, who designed/is designing the Discovery?

Also, typically the nacelle struts connects to the nacelles towards the front rather than the rear of the nacelle, never further back than the mid-point. It looks far less graceful for the nacelles to overhang at the front rather than the rear (one of my main beefs with the Enterprise-D, but at least it transitions in a curve). This thing bucks so much traditional starship design in a way that just looks amateurish rather than bold. It doesn't fit into any sort of lineage.

If I could I would slap the Sanford and Son theme onto the teaser.

Nice work, I think the bridge is more sunken in though.

The top/bottom view is her best I think. I kinda hate the neck. And that font, it's the comic sans of hull fonts.

Looks 10x better than my attempt:

I agree the saucer looks good, and that the nacelles need to be raised as well as pulled in so they aren't flanking the saucer, though I actually like the shape of them as well; they give me a very '60s - '70s industrial design vibe. My biggest issue is still that the delta and saucer shapes do not complement each other at all.

It's not as beautiful as the Sovereign or Akira classes, but it's not as ugly as the Olympic or Oberth classes, nor even the Fatbassador class.

Someone said the components were good but didn't fit together... my opinion is diametrically opposite: I'm not a fan of the nacelles, saucer (doesn't taper enough towards the edges, too small), pylons (not angled enough) nor especially the triangular hull. Neck is fine, though.
BUT, I think those ugly parts look ok when put together.
At least in the trailer, less so on the schematics.

Still, the look of the ship matters little, anyway.

I think we can all agree that this would make a super amazing background ship in a dominion war battle scene, while a different, and much better looking hero ship flies in front of it, obscuring it from view.

:guffaw:Brilliant! Love it! Thank you. :techman:

I really am starting to like the ship. There are some beautiful elements present in the design. Stopping the video and taking time to soak in the little details, flow lines really helps. I'm actually getting pretty psyched for this one.

I did just a quick edit of M's ortho. Just what niggles me about the design, I tweaked. Reshaped the secondary hull slightly and brought the engines in. I think it would look a little better that way. I don't think the engines need to be elevated, but bringing them in a little would give the ship a better elegance I think.

The tweaks I've seen this far makes the Discovery look much better. However, it will depend on the era that the show takes place in that will make the difference.

I guess it's in the eye of the beholder. To me it definitely looks like a post-ENT pre-TOS ship. And that's supported by the 1031 registry, isn't it?

I agree. A pre TOS ship shouldn't be look like a TNG era Ship. Plus, it is not the Enterprise; the first rank starship belong to the Starfleet. Maybe it's just a second rank, or workhorse. It will be funny if we witness a super duper workhorse design that make the NX class (The Earth Federation Flagship) look nothing.

Plus, this is a serialization. Maybe they'll change the ship in the middle of the story.
