Well, it's either beautiful or it's not. I'd say "interesting" = "moderately attractive".

Something can look bad and be interesting at the same time, so that doesn't work. Not that it matters, really. The poll at the start of the thread is obviously biased, but it works well enough considering that the statistical validity of any poll on a site like this will never be very high, anyway.

Plenty of brutalist architecture here in the UK, including my city.
Brutalism is a fancy way of saying depressingly ugly.

I'm not convinced the Discovery was even inspired by brutalism either - it's just modernism.
It's ok for a machine to look like a machine, but not ok for a house to look like a concentration camp on stilts.

I.E. the Salk Institute building, designed by Louis Kahn, in California - very futuristic.

Futuristic in a Blade Runner sort of way.

I love the Ralph McQuarrie concept art but am not a fan of the Discovery.

Agreed, the McQuarrie ship is much nicer looking. But part of the problem is the shitty unfinished CGI, so I'm holding off my fan rage for now. I might end up liking it in the final version, with proper textures etc.

What if it's just as fugly, but entirely congruent with the origins and purpose of the crew and mission? Note that while I insist on using "fugly," it doesn't mean it won't be appropriately fugly.

Well, since this thread is about appearances.....

Watching Down Periscope. Featured an elderly, World War II vintage submarine.

Noticed the emblem painted on the bow of submarine Stingray. Colorful emblem featuring-of course-a stylized stingray. Plus registration number, and the name "Stingray".

Would a commanding officer have the option of having his own emblem painted on the hull?
