Does Paramount no longer own Star Trek?

And yes, unlike Fountain Pen Network, this board is completely and utterly uncensored, allowing sexual, scatological, blasphemous, and even racist words, and for reasons I have yet to fathom, a certain popular ST novelist is rather fond of inserting a form of #6 of the classic "7 words you can never say on television" in her name.

Not quite - racist slurs are against the rules. But yeah, expressing yourself using curse words is definitely allowed. (Different countries have different tolerances towards swearing - says the Brit (where they swear a lot) who moved to Canada (where they do not!) )

Paramount was given a license by CBS to produce new Trek films, but Star Trek itself is owned by CBS in its entirety.
Correct. Theoretically speaking, another studio could make a Star Trek movie, if they had permission to do so by CBS. But given Paramount and CBS have the same parent company, this isn't likely to happen.
This is a PG-13 site, as I understand these things, I can swear as much as I fucking well want.
Indeed, nowhere in the forum rules is profanity forbidden, and if indeed Trek BBS had an issue with profanity, they could easily turn on the forum's profanity filter, thus turning all swear words written out into asterisks. The fact swear words shows up is permission enough to use them.

So since CBS owns S&S does that mean Pocket is guaranteed to always have the license as both it and Trek are still owned by the same company?
I'm kind of surprised that the NCIS: LA novel is being published by Titan books, since it's another CBS show.

Again, theoretically if CBS wanted to give the license to someone else, they could. Being owned by the same parent company isn't a guarantee to getting the license, but it does help.

Actually, for about a minute, I quoted Gaby Johnson's line in Blazing Saddles, announcing Sheriff Bart's arrival, just to see if the racist term therein would post. It did. Of course, in the context of Blazing Saddles, it's no more racist than it is in the context of a conversation between two African-Americans, but only because Blazing Saddles was a tour-de-force of skewering the very idea of racism.

As I gather it, Viacom bought Paramount and CBS, and was apparently itself bought by something called National Amusements, then combined Paramount and CBS, then separated them (but still keeping them under National Amusements ownership), with the existing Paramount Television going to CBS, eventually dropping the Paramount name, and then Paramount decided to get back into the television business.
This sounds like something where many employees were "lost" in the process.

I was trying really hard to think of a joke about DC being called National Allied Publications at some point. It would have been something like 'sounds like the sex toy division of DC Comics, but it didn't really work... Any better suggestions?

Yeah, it's hard to play with toys you don't own, but it's really no different from how other licensed properties are handled. If a licensee doesn't have a complete blank check to do whatever they want, well...

The thing about the CBS & Viacom/Paramount split was that it may not actually have been a good idea in hindsight. Both companies have been trying ever since to rebuild what they've lost in the split. And it really could have been avoided if their mutual owner, Sumner Redstone, had told the heads of both companies to stop fighting and play nice with one another. The split was as much Redstone's personal wish for execs to be happy as it was an idea the companies could work better separately, IMO...

AND YOU CAN KILL YOURSELF AND GO TO HELL, YOU JERK. I can live with a little cursing like hell and the d word, but I don't deserve to put up with f-bombs from some atheistic idiot like you who works at getting to Hell.

I looked and don't see signatures anywhere.

We are the Borg. You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile.
God bless, Jason Irelan

While you may use swear words, I am not sure if you are allowed to insult people.

You aren't - and you definitely aren't allowed to tell people to go kill themselves. @5billionof5billion I'm issuing you with an infraction for flaming and threatening. As before - if you have any comments on this address them to me via PM.

You clearly don't live in the same part of Canada I do (though, to be fair, most of our swearing is québécois, which can get pretty confusing for non-Catholic, non-French speakers--part of the "la société distincte", naturellement ).

Heck, different parts of the same country and different social situations have different standards. What's vulgar at a church social in Amish country is just ordinary adult conversation when hanging out with friends at a bar in Brooklyn . . . .

And you fer damn sure don't want to go down South. Them good ol' boys'll burn your ears off.

In Sunday School.

I often scan the audiences at conventions and readings. If there are a lot of kids in the front row, I may watch my language. If it's mostly adults, I'll talk like a scurrilous writer type . . ..

You're doing Jesus proud. :techman:

Although the infraction was well deserved, I wasn't insulted, more bemused and the irony of it did make me chuckle.
