Spoilers Does it feel to anyone else that SNW is cynically mining Trek's past glories?

It's true ST doesn't always live up to the equality it preaches in practice, partially because some of the guys writing and producing it hold on to their own antiquated ideals
Which is why I find labels of limited usefulness. Why not discuss issues rather than say, "Oh, you're right/left/whatever.?" I know politics are sensitive topics but little conversation is generated by saying "these political people can't possibly like Trek."

I watch a lot of shows I don't 100% agree with politically. But, I'm odd ball in that I love learning about different perspectives.

I don't like politics either but those labels are what people are discussing. Not sure what different perspectives necessarily has to with it but again, that's just the terminology

Because how you might describe an ideology might be different than how I do. To tie back to Trek, if I say "oh I'm a Trek fan!" you might assume I love TOS. But that's not what I mean. I might mean just DS9 or the Kelvin movies.

Different perspectives are great because usually there is nuance under a label.

I'm not disputing that. And yeah I prefer if people are specific about their beliefs

No offense intended but I'm just a little over the "I'm above politics" or "listen to different viewpoints" attitudes i see online.

No one said that you had to be.

This is my view, why I despise some labels. Online they're convenient short hand.

I always get a kick out of people who try to claim ownership of a television show. If Star Trek was a show that only spoke to left wingers, it would have died a long time ago. Though I do find it ironic that the group that claims to believe in IDIC tends to be the ones making this claim and also tend to be the least interested in different viewpoints .

You're not an oddball. You're actually the majority of people who watch television for entertainment. Its how shows like Star Trek, Dallas, Yellowstone and The West Wing can all be successful even though their messages are completely different. They are shows that were able to reach a broad audience, not a narrow one. The oddballs are the ones who take a fictional television show so serious that they think it speaks only to them and how DARE anyone else get any enjoyment out of it.

Well, I'm just saying that Trek fans who hold on to racist and bigoted views missed the point of a large number of the episodes. It's well known that Roddenberry had some progressive views, and that shone through in Star Trek. I'm not saying that they can't enjoy it. I just don't understand how they can criticise new Trek for being too "woke", but will happily watch "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield" or "The Outcast".

Also, "different viewpoints" in the case of people who use the term "woke" negatively is about whether or not certain people deserve rights. If you are racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, etc, I'm not obligated to say IDIC and just accept your prejudice. "Different viewpoints" and IDIC are for when you're talking about things like which Trek series is the best, or what the best toast topping is, not when you're talking about things like if LGBT+ people deserve to be accepted.
This is known as the paradox of tolerance:

Yeah those things don't really make sense but I guess it's masked in sci fi so it's not "real". Although I guess because ST sometimes fails to live up to the diversity it preaches, the anti-woke crowd can still feel comfortable in it

So we're allowed to disagree about toast toppings? How generous of you!

There is no best toast topping because toast is bland. But if you got to eat it, put cheese on top. If you don't like cheese, there's better food out there than dry supermarket toast

Oh, please spare me the nonsensical "tolerant people are so intolerant against intolerant people, how dare they?" talking point. It's not 2016 anymore, no one cares about this whiny self pity BS anymore

Plus the discourse has historically been dominated by the dominant groups anyways

I can't speak for anyone that thinks Star Trek as gone "woke" seeing as how the TOS was as woke as a bird on a Sunday morning. But I do find it interesting that you mention "Let that be your last Battlefield" as that was an episode that showed how both sides fighting over the issue of race ended up destroying their home world. There was nothing one sided about it. Both extremes came out bad because they couldn't get past their personal hatreds. It was a very good episode and one that spoke to a broad audience. I would recommend that episode to anyone no matter what their political preference and background as it is still very relevant to what's going on today, particularly the violence we saw before and after the 2020 election.

And "The Outcast" had a very mixed reception when it was released.

The episode was met with both praise and criticism from the LGBT community. In the case of the latter, criticism came from people who felt that it sanctioned the brainwashing therapy to which Soren was subjected, and others who felt that the creative staff abdicated their responsibility to explore the issue. Some thought the episode too timid, using allegory in lieu of explicitly acknowledging gay relationship, while others critiqued the scenario of a genderless world where heterosexuality was persecuted as the epitome of conservative fears.

As for me I thought it was an okay episode, but there were far better in TNG. And one episode out of 178 is hardly ground for any special interest group to claim ownership of an entire franchise. When I look back on the best of TNG, that episode wouldn't even make my top 20. If you are looking for a good Trek episode on a gay relationship, DS9's "Rejoined" was far better

Spare me the whole "Everyone who argues against me is an intolerant person" B.S. It's older than 2016 and it doesn't work with me. But thank you for showing your hand, and thus, proving my point.
