Does anyone think we'll see the show in the States OUTSIDE "All Access" at any point?

I can't see myself paying $72 a year for something I can get on regular TV and cable, and the only "extra" is ONE TV show. Granted, it's a show I really REALLY want to see, but I just can't justify it.

Could the new STAR TREK possibly end up on cable (and I mean not five years later), on DVD, or even aired on CBS months later after each episode has run on the internet?

It will totally be on DVD/BR immediately after each season ends. It's all about sell, sell, sell.

Ok, again, it's not one show. Star Trek is the FIRST show. They have now announced a spin-off of the Good Wife that will air there. There will be other programming. It may not be your taste, but there will be other exclusive programming. And just like you can't watch Orange is the New Black, Transparent, The Path, House of Cards, or other streaming exclusives elsewhere in the US, you probably won't be able to watch this elsewhere.

Or you could just pay $18 for three months and then cancel when the season ends!

Dukhat is not off the mark but I think it will not be at the start of Q2 for 2017 that the Blu-ray discs will be sold for season 1 of the new series. I think more like mid-November so they have something to sell for Q4. I really hope they do not sell it on DVD format physical media at all but Blu-ray HD only.
Also different division CBS Home Video versus CBS Digital Media for the actual CBSAA run of the show.
DaveyNY see this thread regarding the formal discussion of piracy and implications for business and other aspects of this new Trek series on this subforum.

I think CBS will have this exclusively on CBSAA for 3 years in USA market. I see them eventually selling the series for a linear TV channel run in 5 years after 2017. They will sell physical media Blu-ray discs though but keeping it exclusive for streaming will make anyone go there to watch it. How it plays out with services like iTunes, Microsoft Movies & TV, Google Play for selling episodes will be very interesting. When these episodes or a season-only pass will become available to purchase and download. I'm guessing not before the exclusive run on CBSAA is complete in April 2016. Hmm that would be interesting if it were season-only and not separate episodes to purchase forcing you to have the only low cost option of CBSAA subscription in the short term.

I don't claim to know the intricacies of DVD/BR distribution, but from what I've seen in stores with other TV shows, they tend to pump out the series on disc at a frighteningly fast rate. No more having to wait a year for your fav shows to come out on DVD.

Game of thrones has often out out theirs right before the next season so people can get caught up and then be ready to subscribe for the next season. I think cvs would go this roiute which would be a q4 release.

House of Cards season 4 is set to come out in July. It premiered in March on Netflix. So that's 4 months. If Star Trek follows the same pattern that means DVD release could be in the April-June timeframe depending on if they wait from release of the pilot or finale.

Why? Although both formats are in decline, DVD sales still vastly outstrip Blu-ray sales, they'd be stupid not to release it on DVD too.

And it's the most pirated show there is. I think the studio are more sensible releasing the show soon after it airs, making people wait a year is an outdated model that invites people to find it elsewhere.

For Canadians the rumour is that Crave TV (owned by Bell) will stream the show while CTV will air at least the pilot if not regular episodes. Bell owns the Canadian content rights to all the Trek series except TNG.

Orange is the new black is available on DVD, as is house of cards, at least in canada. But as to people buying it I don't really understand. If the season set is 40 bucks, you might as well just subscribe to the service for a few months instead.

In general I agree with you, and have subscribed to Netflix for specific shows myself. But if the streaming cost is similar to the DVD/BD cost, I can see why someone would rather wait and purchase disks that can be rewatched rather than subscribing to stream a show once and then losing access to it.

Other than the pilot I doubt we'll see the new show on regular TV. It'll be on CBSAA and then on Blu-Ray/DVD, but that will be it. I don't think any of the other shows on similar streaming services have ever been aired on regular TV. All of this applies just to the US, I don't think we know yet if it'll be on regular TV or streaming services in other countries.

I'm sure the iTunes Store will get the new series at some point.

Does the iTunes store have House of Cards or Daredevil?

This is not only short-sighted, but unecessarily punishes those of us who refuses to "upgrade" to Blue Ray AND causes a loss of money for the studio for the same reason.

I've seen Blue Rays and was not impressed. There's no difference to DVD's, and they cost more. I'm sorry the Blue Ray format wasn't strangled in the cradle.

If you think Blu Ray doesn't look better than DVD, then I'd question if you've seen a properly setup HDTV with a Blu Ray.

But either way, I agree with you that it would be stupid for CBS to not release the show on DVD. I can't even think of why someone would be opposed to having the show available on DVD. It doesn't harm anyone to have an extra choice that people with a Blu Ray player can just ignore.

Yeah, I get both DVDs and Blu-Rays from Netflix, and I can see a definite difference between the picture quality of the two formats.
