Does anyone find DS9 to be a bit of a yawn?

I thought the episodes revolving around the Bajorans religion were hit and miss more miss than hit if I'm honest but they had their moments though I never fully got my head round the fact that Sisko was the Prophet to be honest.

Was never a major fan of Kira who funnily enough was a Major for the majority of DS9 personally.

Overall though I enjoyed DS9 as a series it's not my fave but I thought it was a decent series personally.

While the institution itself might not be harmful, and most of the individuals within that institution may be good and honourable people, but blind faith in the institution rather than the God is dangerous. I can't speak for other parts of the world, but I know that in my own country the blind faith that the majority had in the Catholic church was harmful to our society in many ways. On the issue of child abuse, some people had so much faith that the church was right in all things that they didn't believe their own children when they were told of the abuse. Those that did go to the police were often ignored because even the police didn't want to be seen to be taking on the church. The families that did speak out were sometimes ostracised from their communities by those that refused to believe the claims.

Not all institutions are bad or corrupt, but no institution should be excused from scrutiny, be it a government, a private company or a religious organisation. If the majority of people give an institution their blind faith and do not question it then there will be those that join that institution seeking power over others. Winn was such a person, and she was given control over a whole planet because not enough people were willing to question her motives. If it wasn't for Kira standing up against her, Winn could have led Bajor to disaster.

I think that Kira is a good example of a religious person. She believes in the Prophets, she knows that they're real, she has faith that Sisko is the Emissary because he has proven that he is, but she doesn't believe that Winn is good or infallible just because she was elected Kai. She knew that Winn was a bad person, her title didn't matter. If Bareil had been elected instead then Kira would have followed him, not because he was Kai, but because she knew him to be a good person.

I agree. Can't you be more offensive or abrasive? I need like 700 posts! I honestly find it pretty shocking how far some "religious" people have been able to go (from child abusers who claim to be religious heads) to Kai Winn without being unceremoniously tossed out on their butts and left at the mercy of courts. How can a person that violates so many principals of a religion be representing it? :scream:

I agree with a lot of what Jesus said, but not the part about giving away all my possessions. I like my TV too much. :alienblush:
I maintain that's not what he meant, he was seeing what the ambitions of the person really were, which I say as I type on my laptop (anyone notice tho that i7 chips are in laptops now?!?!?!?!?!?!!) Like Kira suggesting Winn should step down and do the right thing (it wasn't really necessary for her to technically step down, if she'd had a revelation and changed her ways completely...) and she was so caught up in losing her position she became even more horrid.

And thank to whoever answered my Mrs Ron question- I tried to multiquote it, and it's not here!! grrrr

They're overly religious,
Yep, over religious ppl are def destroying society and are so irritating....helping the poor w/out govt $$, running orphanages, helping disintegrating families and building homes from scratch is so irritating......

So from my single comment about Bajorans being overly-religious (an accurate observation if you've watched more than ten minutes of DS9) amongst a full paragraph that was merely criticizing the Bajoran episodes as boring, you go on a grammatically flawed and sarcastic fit? Secular charities, orphanages, family organizations and home-building organizations exist. Beyond that point, would you say the same about Muslim extremists? They aren't necessarily running orphanages and charities. You seem to have made the generalization that by "overly religious" I was referring only to Christianity. Don't be so close-minded.

To the fan in the remote, entertainment-deficient reaches: If you can't do something legally, then you can't do it legally. Telling of your difficulties in legally obtaining ST episodes and movies only points out that it is hard to do, not that it is morally justifiable to throw up your hands at the obstacles and steal them. If you wanted clean hands and a clean conscience, you could just have waited. Someday it will be possible and convenient to go the above-board route. And if you are acquiring copyright-protected materials by any other means than buying authorized, licensed, legal copies, then you are stealing. QED. Criminal. You place your personal, selfish desire for instant gratification above the duty of good citizenship to obey the law, which is to uphold the concept of law, the foundation of any society of laws.

Wow, this thread is getting heated? For what it's worth, I liked the Bajoran and the episodes that dealt with the study of their culture. The only thing that made me uncomfortable was Sisko, an alien outsider, becoming a sort of Christ-like figure to these people. I thought the Bajorans had a religion structured like Catholicsm, but they had suffered the persecution of the Jews. Kira was one of my favorite characters because she was so tough and strong. ITA with whoever said that DS9 gave us an in-depth look at alien cultures (Bajorans, Cardassians, Dominion races, etc.), and for the most part, avoided the "alien-of-the-week" phenomenon which plauged most of the other Trek shows. Meeting a new race every week is not all that interesting if you don't gain some understanding of them; after a while it gets boring. I know some people don't like DS9 so much and they're certainly entitled to prefer other Trek over it, but as for me, it's my favorite series.

I've already been permabanned once this month! I'm trying to ensure that doesn't happen again. ;)

LOL, whut? ;)
I'd just have the Dominion take over TBBS... or has it already?

DS9 is fine and dandy for me, but the Bajoran episodes are one giant borefest and I try my best to avoid them. Or at least cross my arms and be negative when I watch them. Pretty much every Bajoran aside from Leeta (And yes, I'm including Kira) embody every annoying trait out there. They're overly religious, they complain all the time, and their ego is totally inflated. As such I find episodes revolving around them and their beloved Prophets to be un-interesting.

Something weird happened to me. I felt the same way the first three times I watched DS9 through from start to finish. Then on my fourth viewing (having watched ENT twice, TOS-R, TAS and a hundred random VOY eps in between) I suddenly got really into the Bajorans. I was full of sympathies and I thought it was kind of cool how this whole planet had a dominant culture that valued gentle spiritual reflection but had been forced into violence by the Cardassian occupation (I recommend HIGHLY the Treklit book Terok Nor by James Swallow which describes the initial occupation in a most believable and fascinating way). I felt like.. I wouldn't mind being a Bajoran. Maybe because I was now older and more chilled than years ago when I started on DS9, maybe it was just my Trek affliction which means I end up liking just about everything I initially loathe (except Riker). I also admire the way DS9 tried to develop Bajoran religion and history and gave us actual theology that changed over the centuries--pretty ambitious stuff.

I'm sure though that if I lived on Bajor I would feel like an abrasive loudmouth. Leeta was a very refreshing Bajoran who would have felt out of place being so extroverted and bubbly in that culture.. I think she may have gravitated towards DS9 because she was labeled the bad girl at home. She certainly felt more real than a lot of the uber pious ones.

I'm amazed PKTrekGirl let the reponse to her last friendly go. I guess she didn't really mean it.

I just figured she hadn't been to the thread since... but I guess that's not the case. Probably some discussion in the mods-only area... :D

I'm pleased we were able to able to have some discussions in spite of it. Clearly some of us are awesome. :bolian:
