Does Anybody Like Harry?

^

Poor Harry. Perhaps simply a victim of bad writing? I do hear the reasoning why people seem to hate him, but I don't get it. He's not a bad guy. A bit bland, maybe... but not worthy of hate, IMO.

didn't hate him, but he was a big waste of a main character in the cast. They should have kept Kes and gotten rid of him. He was the "green ensign," but the problem was they didn't allow him to develop into anything beyond that, so he was STILL the "green ensign" seven years later!

he became kind of a practical joke of a character, to the point where they hung a lampshade on him as the seven-year ensign.

Paris had been demoted and promoted, Neelix had developed into an ambassador, and Harry was still "poor, dumb Harry."(sfdebris)

I liked him. Quite a lot. When he had episodes focusing on him, they could be very good (The Thaw, Timeless), but even so, I never felt any hatred towards him. He's the 'green Starfleet' character. The only problem is, that's all he is.

If he'd hardened up by about Season 4, he could have become a much better character. But I still enjoyed most episodes with him in a large role. His naivety was quite appealing in some ways.

I wanted to like him...but there just isn't much there. Except for the one where him and Chakotay are in the future and have to change the past (I forget the title already).

Harry was fine in episodes that did not center on him. But Favorite Son, The Disease, Nightingale, his episodes sucked and are in my bottom ten. Having said that, I would have to say that his character did grow with the series and Wang put a lot more into the role of Harry than Chuckles put into the role of Chuckles.

Kim likes incest.

Favourite Son was all about doing it with his siblings and cousins.

Is there any way imaginable that he wasn't Miral Paris' Godfather?

Don't forget, he married Tom & Kes' daughter in "B&A".

So yes, Harry had some serious sexual disconnection.

And that the scenario in The Thaw was also being shaped by his mind, showing a man in a leather bondage executioner uniform cutting a piece of wood after it has been inserted into a pink hole...

Take of it what you will...

I tend to agree that Harry just wasn't written well. I still love his character, even though he isn't my favorite anymore.

Omygosh. I so identify with Harry Kim! We are both:

1 - Too young to be taken seriously by all the older and wiser officers, but capable of contributing far more than he gets credit for.

2 - Highly motivated and eager, a people pleaser.

3 - Cute enough to get away with more stuff on occasion

4 - Enthusiastic and indecisive at the same time.

Just don't call me Wesley.

It might have worked better with harry if he was only the relief op's officer on voyager on his first assignment but got promoted to senior staff after the original one died or took the position but did not get a position on the senior staff straight away.

I think Harry was like Geordi, in a way.
Very little to no personality but they're the perfect character due to it to play victim.
That's was Harry's nitch, to be the victim character.

I think everyone is immagining all the times Harry died or nearly died- in a formal or informal way. He actually dies in 'Emanantions', but is revived by the doctor. In 'Non-Sequitur' he discovers himself living a duplicate life on Earth in the same time frame. Initially he is given-up as hopeless but returns to Janeway and the crew. In 'Deadlock' he is the crew member who actually dies but is replenished by his double on the second Voyager. In 'Favorite Son' he is formally advised he must die so a society run by women would be fulfilled. Kim and his 'rubber band soul' becomes famous by the fifth season. Just because what happens to a person might be evil or look ugly doesn't mean he's ripe for a stomping - you should thing first and act secondly.

I like Harry. As I see it, he's the weakest of the Voyager characters but a likable character anyway.

I think he had more potential than we saw in the series. Just compare with the Voyager books from that era where Harry is actually doing something, coming up with brilliant soulutions and involved in a lot of adventures. Unfortunately he gets injured in many of those books but that's another story

I don't see the comparison. Geordi went from helm guy to chief engineer during his time, and was a well-respected and well-developed character.

Harry stayed ensign for seven years, and was a one-note, butt monkey joke of a character.

I'm so angry by the fact that they were originally going to kill him off but didn't simply because he was considered one of the beautiful people at the time or whatever. And then they did nothing with his character.

Respected? Developed? Geordi? Huh?
