I have looked at the Australian Border Security a couple of times but its not really my cup of tea.

My favourite documentaries are

*Anything by Sir David Attenborough
*Brian Cox's Wonders Of series (the Solar System, the Universe, Life) and I believe his next one is going to be on what alien life elsewhere in the Universe could be like.
* Stephen Fry: Gadget Man
* Time Team (with Tony Robinson) - but I only watch it occasionally

Of these I think only Time Team has full episodes on YouTube.

I like the old-time stuffy type documentaries rather than reality fluff which is probably staged or scripted (Ice Road Truckers is another example) -- Kenneth Clark's Civilisation, Jacob Bronowski's The Ascent of Man, Alistair Cooke's America, Ken Burns' The Civil War -- I'm just a dinosaur I guess. Brian Cox tries, but most of the time I want to slap him.

I've really been enjoying the Documentary Channel on DirecTV (Channel 267). Some of that stuff is fascinating...and scary.

Two I watched recently were Tapped (about the private ownership/sale of water), and Bag It (about the use of plastics and their effects on the environment).

I love documentaries. One I've recently watched, surprisingly on the History channel of all places, was about John Vincent Atanasoff, the father of the computer.

I'm a history nut, so brace yourself.

Time Team, I think, is the closest we'll get to actual time travel, it's a great show, and it's a shame it's finishing.

Anything by Bettany Hughes, she's great. Very good on Greek history.

Coast - nice mix of geography, history and social stuff

A History of Scotland - a comprehensive of the country form earliest arrivals to the 1950s, pretty good.

Billy Connolly's Route 66

Joanna Lumley has two good series on Greece and the Nile.

Classic Albums - really good series where they dissect famous albums and how they were made.

Empire - 4 part series about the British Empire.

Ian Gillan - Highway Star - biography of Deep Purple's lead singer, catches great slices of the 60s and 70s through to today

SF-UK - pretty good 8-part series about, as it says on the tin, the history of scinece fiction in the UK. Some surprising stuff.

The Ascent of Money - again, the history of you know what, a real eye opener.

I have some about other music things as well.

Prophets of Science Fiction - Ridley Scott presents 8 famous authors

Who Do You Think You Are? - famous people dive into their genealogy, and can be surprising.

Many more, that's all I can think of for now.

My favorite documentary is an older film called Warrendale.

It's about this terrifying school where kids with behavioral problems are sent. It's terrifying because of the way they apply contemporary, obviously incorrect psychological techniques and basically dominate every aspect of their lives.

I am a documentary ADDICT (aren't the Trekkies one the best? *ducks*) Here are some of my faves:

- Anything by Werner Herzog, "Cave of Forgotten Dreams" especially. "The Burden of Dreams" ABOUT one of his films is also great. He makes multiple short docus every year, it's a real treat.
- HOOP DREAMS. I know almost nothing about basketball, but you don't need to. Following 2 boys through high school, the glimpse into how the poor in the US are treated (especially in education) is shown well here. I can't explain how deep and full of heart this one is.

I watch a lot of cultural ones, I'll stop here but I'd be happy to post more if anyone needs recommendations. A huge amount of docus have great companion books as well.
