Doctor Who Fashion Police.

I was just on Facebook at The Doctor Who Hub https://www.facebook.com/TheDoctorWhoHub looking at the picture at the top of all the faces/lives the Doctor has had. I was looking at each one's style of dress and I came up with the ideal for this thread. Now, fellow Doctor Who fans, follow my lead and tell me which 3 you think are the best dressed Doctors and which 3 you think are the worst dressed Doctors.

For me they rank like this:
3 BEST DRESSED.

#2...David Tennant
#1...Peter Capaldi

3 WORST DRESSED.
#3...Sylvester McCoy--He looks like he should be a hobo on The Andy Griffith show.
#2...Peter Davison--Because of the celery.
#1...Colin Baker--First word I think of when I see his outfit-CLOWN.

If I had played favorites, Matt Smith would've been the best dressed of all of the Doctors because Matt is my favorite Doctor. Come back, Matt!!! Come back!!!

For me:

Best Dressed: 12, 10, 9

There's no doubt that Capaldi's duds are very dapper and sharp and he'd fit in nicely at some posh engagement. Tennant's suits, while somewhat lived-in, gives him the outward impression of being well-dressed, plus the Converse sneakers are a nice contrast. Then I chose Eccleston because he just looks damn cool in what's essentially a contemporary, everyday outfit: leather coat, shirt, jeans & boots. Probably one of the easiest outfits to cosplay too, I'd imagine.

It should be noted as well, that my choices as "best dressed" don't necessarily mean these are my favourite Doctor costumes.

Best dressed, in no particular order:

3, 10, 12.

12 wears a formal suit while being ready for action. 10 could be in a bar or a boardroom (on Fridays with the trainers). And 3 would dapper it up in practically any situation.

My caveat though would be that they are best-dressed FOR THEIR ERAS as well as overall. Pertwee's suits were very chic for the 70s, while everyone else before 2005 was looking out of place in one way or another. Hartnell wore Edwardian fashion from 50-60 years prior - not necessarily out of place on an old man in the early sixties, but hardly current. Other Doctors had an ill-fitting hobo motif or a long scarf to throw things off as well, or McGann's wholly Victorian style attire (albeit with mid-90s shoes).

The less said about the costumes of Doctors 5-7, style-wise, the better. Not necessarily bad-looking, but even for the 80s it was not really what folks were wearing at all.

When people were speculating on Capaldi's aoutfit, I foudn myself thinking that Hartnell's outfit was about 50 years out of date, and dated from the time when the actor was a child, so if Capaldi were to do the same... to an extent the Mod-ish touches are a bit of that...

I've always felt that the Doctor's outfits were never really current with the particular time of each incarnation, although some were more closer than others.

Six' Outfit gets so much trash talk, but, really, it's only the outrageous color scheme that is so awful. IMHO, the solid blue version in Real Time is actually pretty cool

You see the outfit Matt Smith is wearing in my avatar? Well, my ranking in my quoted post wasn't based on it. It was based on the Amy & Rory era outfit with the short brown tweed jacket, which put him in about 6th place. If I ranked him based on the outfit he has on in my avatar, which he started wearing in The Snowmen, then my 3 BEST DRESSED ranking would look like this:

I'm still NOT playing favorites. If I were, Matt would've knocked Peter Capaldi into 2nd place or tied with him for 1st. Peter Capaldi still wins. I like Peter's outfit just a little bit more.

I actually think Tennant's costume will date quite badly, the slightly scruffy pinstripe suit idea is very Franz Ferdinand and makes him look like he's escaped from a 2005 student band. It still passes the muster (just about) now, but I think within ten years it will look as utterly ludicrous as the So That's What I Call The 1970's outfit Pertwee wears (for a perfect example of how "Normal" the Third Doctor's outfit was at the time they made it, check out The Omega Man. There's a bit where the desperate and alone Charlton Heston dresses up for dinner... and he looks like a Pertwee cosplayer).

Tom Baker's scarf will always be iconic and timeless. To the point most people don't notice the clothes beneath it change quite drastically over his run even before season 18 (it starts out as something you can imagine a bored 70's uni lecturer wearing, then goes very Victorian, before going for a very relaxed coat and waistocoat arrangement based on "Whatever the hell Tom felt like wearing" by the end of the Williams era).

McCoy would genuinely get away with his clothes on any high street if not for the question marks on the jumper (and IIRC he has stories of walking about the nearest town in costume when on location and no one giving him a second look).

Eccles probably goes too far into the "Ordinary clothes" direction, even if that was what they were aiming for at the time so as to fight the public's perception of what Doctor Who was. When I was at the Excell last year the 9th Doctor was not only the one with the least number of people dressed up like him, but those that were resulted in a double take from me of "Oh... that's not just a guy in a jumper! He's supposed to be Eccles!".

Of the others (and I'll wait the full year before commenting on Capaldi as I'm not sure if we've seen all the variations on it yet), all are either deliberately anachronistic or very obviously a Costume Made For Television.

Mind, when Matt Smith was in the role every branch of Top Man I went in had tweeds and bow ties everywhere, so maybe his "Indian Jones whilst teaching" costume actually created a fashion?

The thing that amazes me is Colin Baker. Now, I know his costume has its fans, and God bless them. But it is fair to say, it mainly went down with viewers like a cup of sick. And for years my understanding was the reason they stuck with it was because of the cost of making it (and the spare and stunt versions).

So my mind was blown when I watched the production commentary on The Trial of a Time Lord and discovered that they'd had to make a new coat for Colin for season 23 because of the weight he'd put on during the suspension.

Now, considering all the flak (fairly or not) Colin's first year had come under, and considering the Trial season was supposed to be a brand new start that was going to be a statement of intent about the show having a future, and considering the coat had been both widely slagged off and was probably the easiest of the things folks didn't like about the sixth Doctor to change...

If they were having to make him a new coat anyway, why not do something... anything, different with it?

I think that in Vervoids at least he had a new waistcoat, a sort of pink/blue one. Plus there was some variation with the cat pin and the tie (which went from blue to red and later yellow.But that's about the only change that I could think of.

His waistcoat, tie and car pin changed three times to indicate the three different eras.

The Vervoid one also had some extra... girth... added to emphasize Colin Baker's ample frame as well. He'd visibly gained weight since the previous season and that particular vest added even more!

Now, I don't hate Nine or Ten's costumes, but they just looked rather drab. I understand the reason to not have such flashy suits like their predecessors so that there's more emphasis on character work, but to me a part of the Doctor's had some sort of pizzazz. I was quite happy with Eleven's first suit kind of bucking that trend, but his second suit pushed it further and got my vote.

My picks for worst actually clash a bit: Six and Seven were too garish, but their predecssor Five was too boring and bland. No sense of balance between the three suits.

Lastly, for me the jury's still out on Capaldi. I think I prefer his jacket open. The lack of neck accessory bothers me like Nine and Five, but it's not a dealbreaker this time. And I'm pleasantly surprised that he's wearing carrot pants.
