Doctor Who & Blake's 7 - the same universe?

"I only drink to be sociable. Cheers, Orac."

"I'm just the girl next door."
"If you were the girl next door, I'd move."
"Where to?"
"Next door."

"Staying with you requires a degree of stupidity of which I no longer feel capable."
"You're just being modest."

"It's considered bad manners to kill your friends while committing suicide."

My favourite Avon quote, though, is one that's got good depth and meaning, and I like it as a mission statement: "I have never understood why it should be necessary to become irrational in order to prove that you care, or, indeed, why it should be necessary to prove it at all."

Blakes 7 isn't comparable to other shows, other shows are comparable to it

It's kinda like Firefly, only better...

I wasn't too terribly impressed with Firefly, so that isn't saying much..but I hear it has a following, which is okay..

I'll check it out, I like the images of the space ship, though I am wondering is the ball the back or the front??

You're not the only one...

I wasn't too impressed with the show, myself.;)

I loved it how Avon could be cruel even when he's trying to be kind, like when he goes to see Cally in 'Sarcophagus':

*knocks on door*
"What is it?"
"Well it looks like a door and it's closed."

The ball was supposed to be the front but some-one cocked up when filming the sfx shots and it went at the back or so the story goes.

And another Avon quote

"I'm sorry I missed that. It's the sort of natural stupidity that no amount of training could hope to match".

You know, we really ought to stop spoilering Superstarion by quoting the good lines.

"There's some journalists who'd like to interview you."
"No. They can use stock footage for the obituary."

Oh, and the absolute classic:
"You handled them very well. But one more death, and they will leave you."
"Then I'd be very careful. It would be ironic if it was yours."

A good friend of mine was a big Blake's 7 fan, but she never managed to get me hooked. There is a great picture of her and Jaqueline Pearce at a con where they look like mother and daughter.

"Yes but then I'm not a profesional killer."

"That's not what the critics say!"

Yes we really should stop!

BTW, I'm glad the ship got turned the wrong way round, the Liberator looks far cooler and iconic this way!

Avon: "Have you murdered your way to the wall of an underground room?"
Servalan: "It's an old wall, Avon. It waits."

Other cheerful things in the B7 universe: torture of political and other prisoners of the state; populations made passive by mass drug suppressant; medical testing on human subjects.

Not to mention Conversion of criminals/malcontents into enhanced blood craving cyborgs, narcotics, alcohol abuse, casual murder..."What about Dr Plakston?" "Who?"

All this plus Space Rats..."They're maniacs, psychopaths! All they live for is sex and violence, booze and speed. And the fellows are just as bad."

And in a still-topical side to it (as I'm sure the Wikileaks founder will agree) the whole thing starts with an anti-government protester being falsely convicted of child abuse.

Ha ha, assuming he's innocent (though it is curiously convinient timing isn't it!)

If he's actually a rapist, the prosecutors picked the worst possible time to go after him - just after he releases a shedload of US documents and announces that he's been warned of dirty tricks coming. There's no way any conviction could be believed, under those circumstances.

Exactly! So either it's a fit up, coincidental bad timing, or else he's an evil genius to have manipulated it this way!

It probably is the middle one, but like you say no one will belive that!

TBH, when the news reported "wikileaks founder accused of rape" the first thing I thought of was Roj Blake...

The big problem with reconciling the two series is that in Who aliens, and non-humanoid aliens, are common.
In Blake's 7 there's very few - even humanoid aliens are a rarity to judge by Avon's initial reaction to Cally. So to fit Blake anywhere into the Who universe, you have to explain where all the aliens went...

Maybe the Federation just had a xenophobic culture

In the Doctor Who universe, there's some kind of human empire or federation or commonwealth that seems to last for a very very long time, and every time we see what it's like, it seems to be completely different. So I guess anything is possible.

If it's far enough in the future, those could all be true.

The book The Colony Of Lies mentions an Earth Federation which could be the one in B7 which later becomes the Earth Empire seen in Frontier In Space & The Mutants
