I was trying to remember if she'd been one of the dozen of bland and forgettable Eternals characters.

It was an unpleasant return for me back to the post-credits scene of the first Avengers, where I was left wondering, "Who is this purple man, and why should I care?"

It sort of goes with the Illuminati sequence, which I found kind tiresome and sort of vindicating the critique that Marvel movies just exist to induce you to watch the next movie and ensure you watched the previous movie (my take had always been, "Yes, that's how serial fiction works"); now they're trying to give you the good-feels by referencing obscure, crappy parts of their own mythologies with Black Bolt, halfway-references to unrelated movies with Professor X (who was not actually any of the three or four earlier versions of Professor X Patrick Stewart had played), and references to imaginary movies people on the internet made up with John Krasinski as Reed Richards.

Finally got to see it. Here are some of my dumb thoughts:

-SW went from "regular evil" (enslaving an entire town) to "super duper evil" (killing every mofo she sees) off camera. Guess that saves time but I'm surprised they went that way. But if you think about it, it makes total sense...

-...considering her life: Growing up in a war zone, losing her parents to violence, being experimented on and manipulated by Hydra, being manipulated and betrayed by Ultron, losing her brother, accidentally killing all those Wakandans, being tortured on the Raft, losing her robo-boyfriend, going crazy and creating and losing her kids...There was no way her story wasn't going to end in villainy.

-I was worried this would be a Multiverse movie and not a Doctor Strange movie but they were able to keep focus on him and allowed his supporting cast to at least participate.

-Is this the first live action Professor X hover chair? (Was it actually hovering?) That thing was huge! No wonder they never used it before.

-Doctor Strange may not remember Peter Park but he still remembers having a recent adventure with the Spider-Men.

-I've never read a comic with the America Chavez character but I guess based on this movie I can assume she doesn't do much that's useful and is constantly falling off of things? And if her power is opening up starways into other universes I can't imagine she'd be much help on a super team. Maybe she'll learn some cool magic tricks though.

-Was that cow person at the monastery supposed to be the character that raised Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver in the comics? (Am I even remembering that right?)

-Cool cameos in the Illuminati. No Namor though. Guess they weren't ready for that yet (but your kids are gonna love it).

-I also had no idea that Capt Pike played Black Bolt. Never got around to watching that show but maybe it can be my next "having something on in the background while I do laundry" show.

-Doctor Strange created a giant magic buzz saw to chop a bus in half. Immediately after that all I could think was "do another buzz saw and chop that octopus monster in half." But he didn't for some reason.

-I had heard that this might be too scary for kids so I left mine at home (10 and 7). After seeing it, it probably wasn't that bad so when it pops up on Disney+ I'll show it to them.

-Looking forward to the deleted scene where Reed Richards puts Black Bolt's stapler in a Jell-o mold.

That was a minotaur sorcerer named Rintrah. He's an established Dr. Strange supporting character and nothing to do with Wanda's nanny who, iirc, was a cow because she was one of the High Evolutionary's animal people.

Also, America didn't start learning to control her powers until the end of the movie. She'll obviously be more effective in the future. And her powers include strength and durability (not sure exactly what level, but something superhuman). She did give Wanda a super-punch in the face towards the end of the film, but, well, Wanda's way too powerful to care about that sort of thing.

RE: Namor-- there have been unconfirmed rumors of Namor appearing in the Black Panther sequel. Unlike the other members of the Illuminati, Namor has never been depicted in live-action. They probably didn't want to detract from his first live-action appearance by introducing a variant Namor first. Also, you'll note that there is an empty chair on The Illuminati's council. Could be for Namor, who knows?

Is that any different from how Batman Begins ended with Gordon handing Batman the Joker Card?

Or are you gonna "Obviously that's different cause it's Joker"?

Oh, come on. Of course, it's different because it's the Joker. Everybody knows the Joker. My mom knows the Joker. Clea?! Nope.

Didn't notice it hovering, but I did notice how awfully cumbersome it was. Sir Patrick seemed to struggle with it, and really think they should have gone with something smaller. It was more Captain Pike's wheelchair than anything I'd seen Charles use before (keeping in mind I have zero knowledge of the comics or cartoon)

I didn't get it was Thanos at the end of The Avengers because I wasn't familiar with the Infinity Gauntlet. Most of my knowledge of Marvel Comics comes from FF and Spider-Man comics of the 70s and 60s reprints as well as the occasional purchase of other books. I didn't get it was Clea either because she looked more like an Eternal than Clea from the comics. I didn't let that lack of knowledge disrupt my overall enjoyment of the film though.

Big comics nerd, so I knew who Clea and Thanos were. Though even without that knowledge, I would have parsed that Thanos was the bigger bad the Chitauri and Loki were working for.

Yeah I thought the Thanos scene worked anyway because of the smirk.

Well, first of all, it is, but secondly, even if you (somehow) were totally ignorant of the existence of the Joker, it functioned as sequel-bait and not a twist and secondarily sequel-bait. The Joker tease didn't position him as, like, the man behind the curtain for the whole first movie.

I kind of assumed that was the whole point, to get the people who are familiar with the character excited, and to make the people who aren't curious about who she was.
So have all of the rights issues with Namor been resolved then?

In the main book Doctor Strange is Dead and Clea is new the Sorcerer Supreme of Earth.

Marvel is going to lengths to reintroduce her to the noobz.

No, the point is to get you excited for what comes next. "The Joker? Ooh, I know the Joker, I like the Joker, I wanna see that." "The Avengers Initiative? Man, they're actually going there, this is so cool." "Hey, that's Thor's hammer. Cool, Thor's next!"

And also, that bit at the end of Batman Begins wasn't even supposed to be sequel bait. It was literally taken from the ending from Year One, one of the main influences of the movie, and the point of it was to tell the audience that now the origin part is over and this is now the character and the franchise status quo you are familiar with. They decided in hindsight to do the Joker in the sequel.

And this does that job, it had a new character you never met before popping up to get Strange started on his next adventure and we see Strange has gotten used to his new eye. Curiosity piqued.
