Do you, would you hike alone?

I do it all the time, up in the Blue Hills; but that's not very far from civilization.

RJDiogenes - I was right over in that neck of the woods today for work. I've been doing a lot of driving around the Boston area for work lately, and am surprised at how many beautiful greenspaces and parks there are for the middle of a big metro area. We also went right past the Arnold Arboretum and a greenway along the Neponset River today.

To answer the original post, I guess it comes down to how you define 'hiking.' I go by myself regularly to the local trail parks and wander around a few miles. But these are well traveled trails surrounded by developed areas.

But I wouldn't go for a 10 mile backcountry hike in the White Mountains by myself. Just too much that could go wrong. Fortunately, the wife loves to hike, so we just go together.

Not a hiker, so probably not. HOWEVER, I wouldn't worry about being mugged or worse while alone. It's just not the kind of thing I worry about. If I were going somewhere relatively remote, I'd be sure to bring emergency supplies along. But yeah, if I were so inclined, I'd have no problem hiking by myself.

If I went hiking alone I would make sure I had a gun. I hear of too many stories about hikers being attacked by animals or humans.

Me too, I try to hike on a weekly basis at the most and twice a month at the very least and I like to go alone....and ya know why? Because I can do whatever hike I want and for however long I like and I don't have to tailor it to the other person...or hear complaining and bitching about it. So I take my dog and never a peep outta her.
Yeah, I like the solitude-- which would be kind of compromised by a companion. :D

Yeah, that's called the Pope John Paul Park now. I live right down the street from there. The Blue Hills are just up the expressway in Braintree and Dedham. There are several nice little spots near the South Shore Plaza, if you know where that is. My favorite spot is farther up 128 in Dedham, by the Trailside Museum.

I'm a Metrowest guy myself. Just got back from Callahan State Park after a nice afterwork jaunt with the dog in the woods.

Ashland State Park is also a great place offseason. I also like World's End in Hingham and Halibut Point Park in Cape Ann.

I've lived here just over a year, so I'm still exploring things.

^ So we're supposed to live in fear and stay home because you men like to rape, kill and murder? I'm living my life and I'm not letting fear stop me. Statistically I should be alright..and if not than I died doing something I loved to do.

You love being raped and decapitated?

Everyone likes to have statistics on their side...until they become a statistic.

Good. Good..someone backs up my fear-mongering.

This reminds me of women at work talking about travelling and not wanting to stop at rest areas for fear of attackers.

Though, most rest areas around here have attendants and are well lit at night. Now in other areas, maybe not.

Yes, I would go bushwalking alone.

But unlike the idiot Miss C mentioned in her OP I wouldn't go bushwalking alone in an alpine region (such as it is in this country), in winter, without making it quite clear where I was going or taking an emergency beacon.

And if I slipped down a hillside, I wouldn't refuse the offer of help from other walkers and opt instead to try to walk out by myself.

Ah, yes, World's End is great, too. I've never been to the others, although Callahan is on my list.

I think that this incident is going to haunt him for the remainder of his political career.

Oh please! Yes there are incidents but really you're being overly dramatic.

Must I be decapitated....granted that may be the only way to shut me up...but still! :p
