Yes...and an element that was frequently missing from Star Trek later as well.

Voyager had a fair bit of fun and adventurous spirit. It did comedies the best of any Trek series IMO. However, it was criticised for its lack of things like internal conflict and a more desperate situation for the ship - ie. for not being dark enough. Enterprise, of course, wound up taking that darker path in season 3 - and was criticised for being too grim.

The lesson being that you'll never please all fans.

This and other interviews from Rainn Wilson makes it seem, like DIS Mudd will be a completely different character than TOS Mudd. Not even a hint of a comic relief. Just a typical nasty criminal.

I don't know about that; in retrospect his actions in Mudd's Women were pretty nasty (in fact the whole episode is really dark). I don't see it as much of a stretch for him to be a potentially nasty and dangerous character in a certain situation.

I think the show should start of the way it is going and gradually start being lighter with every season (that assuming more seasons will happen)

so here's a video in which mary wiseman (cadet tilly) describes the show as "gritty" while sitting on a shiny, futuristic, brightly-lit set. when i first watched this video, my non-trekkie boyfriend turned to me and said "that doesn't look gritty to me".

I'm more concerned that in some interview, she compared her character to Harry Kim.

Since we haven't seen a single episode how can we evaluate whether we want the show lighter or darker? There is a definite tone to the trailers, but it remains to be seen if the actual show matches the that tone. If it does, I say they're spot on.

I'm hoping that the dark is on the outside of the ship. A close knit crew, maybe a little competition and animosity among clashing personalities, but the drama and intrigue should be in the big and ominous unknown.

I think the time for dark and gritty trek, where things went from bad to worse every week, and even the most popular characters could be potted from the blue, and every episode progressed the march to war, was Enterprise.

The world got grim, its time for some stand out telly that isn't gloom. Growth, progress, unity, hope, prosperity, that sort of stuff. Cough: Section 31: cough.

Perhaps something happens to Harry, after we see him in DSC, that turns him into the comical character we saw in TOS.

Such as: maybe Harry hasn't met Stella yet in DSC, and his marriage to her is what makes him snap.

The story they're telling should ultimately determine the tone. If the story and subject matter requires the tone to be darker then so be it. Within reason after all. You can still be dark and somber without showing gore or flowing blood, etc. Also just because something isn't happy go lucky doesn't mean it's dark in the first place. A show being serious or trying to "authentic" doesn't mean it's dark. The color used in the show doesn't mean it's dark either I feel. I've thought for a while now that "darker" and "lighter" are the wrong words to be used in conversations like this.

Two more interviews which indicate again quite a dark tone.

I also wonder why they use Mudd at all. This and other interviews from Rainn Wilson makes it seem, like DIS Mudd will be a completely different character than TOS Mudd. Not even a hint of a comic relief. Just a typical nasty criminal. DIS Mudd looks also clearly older than TOS Mudd which makes not much sense, too. That grey beard really ages him. So why not just create a new character, if they want a darker, edgier and older criminal character?
I'm treating it like a reboot, so stuff like character ages and different characterization don't matter.
