Do You Use Closed Captioning?

All my life I've had a little trouble understanding the spoken word, so when I got my first TV with closed captioning on it I was so delighted! It's particularly good to have when people speak with foreign accents. Or when someone else in the room with you is talking or making noise. I always have it on now, though it is annoying that it spoils what people are about to say because you find yourself reading the text before they say it. So I sometimes turn it off for a comedy where the punchline would be spoiled. My GF doesn't really like to have it on so it's a constant struggle ;)

Do you use it?

Dammit... I meant to put a poll in but I hit send too soon. Can mods add polls in after the fact? If so, thank you!

I do sometimes when I can barely make out the dialog because it wasn't picked up that well in production or the actors don't enunciate that well. I also sometimes like watching closed captioning because sometimes dialog from an earlier script ends up there.

I always have subtitles on when I watch DVDs but I am less likely to use close captioning on my TV because of the often poor timing of the captioning.

I am slightly hard of hearing.

I use it on our bedroom tv so i can keep the sound down and see understand whats going on.

No, I can't stand having cc on the screen because my eyes and focus are directed at the words instead of what's actually happening in the scene. To me, it's a giant distraction.

I use subtitles while watching most DVD's the first time - I can't believe how often people whisper lines for dramatic effect. (Yes, I'm a bit hard of hearing) I don't use close captioning, though, because I don't like how edited and delayed it is.

When we had time to watch movies more often the wife and I usually turned on the subtitles because she doesn't like the TV turned up loud enough to... you know... hear it.

We started using captions when DD was learning to read. Seeing the words and hearing the dialogue seems to have helped her. Now that DS has discovered the magic of words (he's reading!), he wants the captions, too.

Closed captioning is the reason why my writing skills has got improved. Closed captioning is like reading books, you know? It helps you to understand what's going on and it's so difficult for me to understand what they're saying on the tv. That requires of me to turn the CC on tv in the order to understand what they're saying.

That's because I'm deaf and it has become of my bad habit of using the CC on tv.

Closed captioning is the true magic. We can't live without them. I know lots of people that I've been told that I'm sounding like asian, but I'm not, really. I used closed captioning to matching my writing skills. Although, I plans on to go to college to improve my writing skills, so I won't have to depending on CC anymore.

I only use it when the tv is muted. Or when I want to make fun of the CC people for typos ;)

I like it. :techman:

I have my TVs set up to do CC when muted..enables me to keep informed on the action even when my beloved is talking to her Brazilian family on the phone..

I use it for two reasons.

1. I'm very hard of hearing. I can't hear shit.
2. I have two young kids, so what I can hear is drowned out by their constant clamor.

Joe, what?

We keep cc on all of the time. When cc doesn't work for a DVD, we turn on the subtitles.

I knew my husband was the one for me when he told me he preferred subtitled foreign films to dubbed. Hearing the actor's vocal performance, even in a language I cannot understand, is essential for me, and the subtitles are not distracting.

I use closed captioning as well. It's helpful for when there is background noise, and it allows me to turn the volume down so as not to disturb my roommates.

Close Captioning usually sucks, far behind and missing way too much, so I generally skip it even with my horrible hearing.

Subtitles however on DVDs and Blu Rays are always on if provided.
