Didn't Welling's contract stipulate that he would never wear the Superman outfit in the course of the show? I wouldn't see that changing for the screen. Although if he were offered enough money he might change his mind.

Assuming Smallville continuity even allows for the existence of Superman in the first place, or if it leads to something completely different.

Welling wore the costume in the last episode, and flew as Superman happily...

it did lead to Superman of sorts lol

Ah. I see. I have never seen the show but I heard how different it was from mainstream Superman continuity - they seemed to be going out of their way to be different, so I figured they were leading to something else entirely. But if the costume appeared even once then I guess that's fine...

I think if it's going to be a new continuity, then you might as well cast new actors. As much as I liked the show, Smallville has too much backstory for movie audiences who are not familiar with the series. But, I'd like to point out that it is not an elseworlds story, as 23 skidoo said. (Sorry, I don't know how to work the links yet!) Rather, it's a new interpretation of the origin that still ends up pretty close to where the comic books and other adaptions have ended up. I mean, the Nolan Batman movies could be seen as "elseworlds" too, since they don't follow the strict continuity of the comics.

I think they missed the boat when they didn't cast Henry Cavill as Superman. Just watch him on Person of Interest and tell me that the powers that be didn't mess up.

Of course he could be cast as an aging Batman\Bruce Wayne and do a theatrical verson of "The Dark Knight Returns" and that would be pretty cool too!

BTW, I voted yes just because I like to pull for the underdog!!

OMG!! I freakin' meant Jim Caviezel!! WoW!! I gotta go lay down...too much typing today....sheesh!!!

I don't know if seeing him pull his Clark Kent shirt back and having a Superman T shirt underneath counts as him "wearing the suit", though.

But you're right about the show. While Smallville was "Reimagined", it did lead to Superman, just not in a straight line the way previous versions have.

If they had cast Tom Welling, then, for better or for worse, the world would have thought it's SMALLVILLE: THE MOVIE. And that's not the idea.

You want to reboot the franchise, make a clean break from the past? Don't cast the guy who just played Clark Kent on tv for ten years . . . .

Welling's "Smallville" contract has been the subject of much myth and speculation over the years. None has ever been confirmed to my knowledge. As Jetfire stated correctly he did say he would be open to the notion of playing Superman and that it wasn't up to him. All of this is moot now since Cavil is cast. Not really sure what the point of this poster's threads is if only to establish that he seems to be a Tom Welling fan.

Greg hit the nail when he said if Welling was cast as Superman most people would assume that we were getting a "Smallville" film. Nolan and Snyder want to establish their own continuity, separate from what has been done before.

And, of course, if Welling was cast, SMALLVILLE fans would expect Erica Durrance to be cast as Lois, Michael Rosenbaum to play Lex, and, hey, where is Chloe?

No. I wanted a Superman movie and not a Smallville continuation. I really liked Smallvile but it was about Clark's journey to become Superman. Once he becomes Superman then the premise of the show is completed.

This is a sci-fi and fantasy topic not a general tv/media one, and I think the topic is being well enough discussed there.
