Do you think this movie will make Star Trek 'cool'??

Cool? Not a chance in hell. Star Trek's basic theme of space exploration, science and thinly disguised morality plays will always be a massive turn-off. Having said that, the film can still be an utter trainwreck, so long as that notoriety translates into box office and DVD sales... in which case, we can expect more where it came from.

You can't wait for opening night, can you?

I'm hoping that this film will be a big hit and not only revive the Trek franchise but also launch a slew of copycat films. Hell, I want the next decade to be filled with big budget remakes of every shitty scifi series out there, from Captain Video to Space: 1999 and beyond!

Of course, I'll be perfectly content if I enjoy the film... whether it bombs or not. ;)

Star Trek Cool ?
Was it ever cool ?
Are Nerds Cool ?

Granted nerds run the world thanks to computers, but we're still viewed as uncool, geekish, ect ect ect.

Then again Galaxy Quest was a huge hit even with the so called 'Mainstream' types and it was a nod to Trek and Trek fandom without painting it in an overall negitive light.

Yes some of us can be overly obssesive, but for the most part we do have lives outside of the fandom like GQ tryed to show those who've only seen just one side of it.

I for one saw GQ as a ligit Trek film, mostly because it rang true to the idea of teamwork, friendship, ect more then the more 'recent' actual Trek films did.

So, Star Trek Cool ? Maybe.

Well, yeah, but GQ was a comedy starring Tim Allen. It wasn't a traditional science fiction film. I think comedies are mainstream for the most part. Nobody has every really worried about making a comedy appeal to the mainstream. Nobody asks if "Wedding Crashers" or "Meet the Fockers" will make comedy cool again. Even ST-IV was at least partially a comedy, moreso than a scifi. At least it seemed like it was trying to be funny.

Scifi itself, I don't think can be cool. At least not if it wants to be true to itself. Wars is mostly an adventure that just so happens to be set in space. You could have made it a straight up fantasy story if you'd wanted to with very few changes. Scifi is always about ideas -- What defines sapience, did we create the idea of god, whatever.

I don't think you can make scifi cool without changing what it is. And most of the time a movie or show that's trying to be cool ends up as a joke. It's like giving your grandfather a leather jacket and a mohawk. It's more likely to cause laughter than make the kids think he's cool.

I'm not sure it will ever be 'cool', I hear enough groans and snickers in theaters whenever there has been a Trek movie preview. My hope is that it takes off like it did in the TNG era when it was huge. Don't remember if it was cool then but it was hot. Perhaps these youngsters can kick some life into it which would make me smile.

I'd settle for a movie that has the same broad appeal TVH had.

TVH succeeded, because, and fans are loathe to hear this, but it's true, it made fun of Star Trek. It was essentially a comedy with a conservation message thrown in. TPTB thought, "Hey, the mainstram pop culture has been making fun of Star Trek since Bobby Pickett's 'Star Dreck'. It time to get on the bandwagon and make fun of ourselves,". The only "cool" thing about Trek is that it's "cool" to make fun of it, as it "cool" to make fun of sci-fi and fantasy in general.

So I'm not sure I want our heroes bumbling around in our era for a laugh in the hopes of mainstream appeal. You, maybe. But not me.

I don't want it to be cool, actually.

Whenever the mainstream is attracted to something, it normally turns me right off that thing!

Star Trek probably will never see the 'Voyage Home', 'TNG' or 'First Contact' crossover popularity again.

Trouble is if Trek XI doesn't get that kind of appeal given the supposed huge budget then it might well be a colossal flop!
