Do you think there was a race even more powerful than the Q?

The Prophets are pretty damn powerful in that Celestial Temple of theirs. Wasn't there a Miranda or such in one of the Q novels? The one where the universe is Times Square and theres a bomb somewhere that will blow it up?

Depends on your frame of reference. The Q are omnipotent with regard to our universe, but not with regard to their own.

guinan was on the enterprise prior to the episode where q was stripped of his powers

q was unaware that guinan was aboard

not all knowing. which q claims to be. so not all powerful. which q also claims

^but does 'all-knowing' in this case mean you are conscious all the time of every little fact there would be to know, or merely that you have instant access to any knowledge you need? Perhaps Q being stripped of his powers could be compared in that respect to him losing connection to the 'Q internet'....

Then again, the writers may not have established just what Guinan was at that point. They could have intended her to be an actual Q. So in that case it makes sense if Q didn't know she was on board because she could have concealed it from him.

(You'll notice that when Guinan first sees Q, she actually strikes a fighting pose...like she could have really retaliated against him. If the writers had already known she was an El Aurian at that point, that would have been pointless.)

Although it's probably just an example of Quinn being right - the Q are not omnipotent and our Q was just bullshitting the whole time.

Given the inherent unreliability of your typical Q, I don't see any reason why Quinn was or was not being truthful. You really can't trust a Q.

By the way, what was Nagilum? It was pretty powerful, although we never get more than a taste of its power or what it could or could not do

I think the Organians must rank as one of the most powerful races in the Trek universe! Look at what Ayleborne was able to do to both the Klingon Armada and the Federation Starfleet all at once and be in two places at the same time! And also they found human and Klingon behaviour most repugnant rather than be mischievous and try to upset humans like the Q!

And you base the 'inherent unreliability of your typical Q' on the observation of exactly how many different Q ?

I think we only can really say that about 'our' Q, we simply don't have enough material on other Q, such as Quinn, Q's wife, etc. (Discounting Q2 for the moment since he seemed an adolescent in growing pains).

Though we do have that Guinan statement: ' Not all the Q are alike. Some are almost respectable.' Also, I'll admit I'm inclined to believe Quinn rather than Q solely on the fragile basis of him seeming more sincere.

I’ve always wondered if the Q are really all that omnipotent, the only thing that seemed truly powerful was flinging 1701-D to the edge of Borg space (but the Kalandans and others could do that), it seems almost everything else could have been mental illusions or similar, since I don’t recall anything the Q did being particularly permanent. Plus, it seems sort of Q-like to pretend you’re something you’re not...

Q's power over humans is analogous to the power of humans over their pet fish. Humans are powerful enough to do whatever they please to the fish, and can freely move in and out of the water, but they can't do whatever they want in their own universe. It's the same with Q, they can do whatever they want to the fishtank.

For all their power, the Q don't feel like they have legitimately held that power for a long time. They feel more like a bunch of upstarts, nouveau riche, so to speak, trying to impress and dazzle all 'lesser species' with their abilities. Or at least the Q we meet most, and his wife.

So I wouldn't be too surprised if we learned at some point that the Q only got their current status relatively recently (and only then, because of their time travel abilities had existed from the beginning of time, as they claim).

There are races though that feel like they are 'older' and very powerful, such as the Prophets, and the Organians. Even, despite his pedo vibe, the Traveler feels genuinely 'old' to me. Guinan too (even though she doesn't appear that powerful). But not the Q.
