So, what do you folks think of another Prime Universe film happening? If Discovery does very well, I could see Paramount possibly considering another Prime movie... but I doubt it. I don't think they would want to "confuse" the mass-market, as the JJ films exist in an entirely separate timeline... Then again, I understand that the status of Discovery being in the Prime Universe is a tad up in the air right now (Soft reboot? Starts out in Prime, but some inter-dimensional stuff comes into play?).

I also realize I'm putting the cart ahead of the horse. That said, I'm just interested in what the community here thinks of this.

Anyways, thoughts?

:)

I am pessimistic given the performance of Beyond that we will see another movie for a long time unless DSC is very successful. This theory could also be FOS given the recent regime change at Paramount, and they give things another shot regardless.

If we do see another movie anytime soon, it will be in the Kelvin universe.

I think a DSC movie would get trapped in the intergalactic void between CBS and Paramount's legal departments.

Agreed! But some folks on here seem to be better researchers/have their ears to the ground about things; that's why I posed the question.

Also, hello, fellow Bay Stater!

Star Trek 4 in the Kelvin universe is already being written, with early casting underway. That might not come out until 2019, so as not to confuse audiences, I doubt the Prime universe will make any large screen appearance again.

That and Discovery acting as a visual reboot of the universe at least already, any new movie will be substantially altered from what we know as to be a separate production altogether.

Where have you heard that? I have only seen some innuendo from Simon Pegg about working on the script, and the "announcement" about Star Trek 4 featuring Chris Hemsworth that was more about marketing for Beyond than anything else.

There was more in an interview or announcement last month about Paramounts projects over the next couple of years mentioning both Discovery and a movie underway. I haven't had time to keep up on every little detail on social media, but the studio seems determined to have at least a fourth movie by 2020.

All very good points. You said it better than I could.

I'll just keep wishing for a sudden announcement of a new Prime movie, set in the TNG/post-TNG era, starring Sir Patrick Stewart, Mr. Brooks, Mr. Dorn...... ahhhh one can hope.

I think we should also bear in mind that Discovery is being handled by CBS as opposed Paramount, and both companies seem to have different goals when it comes with the path they want the franchise to follow. Paramount seems very content with the Kelvin Universe films and the new universe they can play with without worrying about CBS undermining them. Whether or not Discovery does well, I can't see the two companies coming together to produce a film based off it, or the prime universe in general.

I think it's as likely as some of the other current popular TV properties getting a feature-length film, like GoT, OITNB, Walking Dead, etc. IOW, not likely.

I'm sure plenty of fans would like another 24th century adventure, but that's not what Paramount is going to produce from here on out.

I'm not saying there won't be another movie set in what we call the prime universe, but it'll be a new crew, ship and look to the era. Not that they wouldn't use concepts and character ideas that resemble certain things from TNG-VGR but we won't be seeing those specific shows back again.

If Trek 4 doesn't go ahead, they'll give Trek a break from the big screen for a while.

We're not going to see another prime universe film ever again. It would be pointless to make one. And from what we've seen so far, DSC is barely going to be prime universe itself; more likely a reboot.

Hmm...I think the future of the Star Trek films is cloudy right now. Paramount just replaced their CEO due to a year of under performing at the box office, to which Star Trek was a contributor. Gianopulos has to get his own team assembled, make assessments, shake things up and deliver a decent 2017 given a set of movies he inherited but did not make. He also needs to create a pipeline for 2018+ and I hope Star Trek is a part of that. But I expect any decisions made under the prior regime will be under the microscope.

ST4 will, from what I hear, be the final Kelvin-verse film. So it's a very open-ended question as to which universe any subsequent films (if there ever are any) would involve.

Right now, all we can count on is a couple of seasons of Discovery, and see where it goes from there.

I doubt it as at this point the only cast still intact, for a potential film is TNG's and they wore out their welcome at the cinema over 14 years ago

The whole point of establishing two timelines was so Paramount and CBS could produce Trek without having to worry about what the other is doing. The minute the movies go back to Prime all that is undone, and you have entirely separate creative teams trying and failing not to step on each others' toes.

Paramount have talked about expanding the Trek movie universe before (a "SEAL Team Six of the Star Trek universe" movie), but with big changes at the top there anything could happen.

And also, what we've seen of Discovery so far doesn't exactly jibe with the Prime universe, at least visually. If Discovery is a huge success it'll just show Paramount what they already learned in 2009 - they can change what they want, and if the end result is good people will watch it.

I don't think a "blockbuster" is on the cards. But there maybe some other feature length project that could be done. It's not something though that's on the horizon atm obviously because the series hasn't commenced yet.
