do you think star trek success?

This seems appropriate.

thanks for this, Squig. it's really interesting to see the steady drop in viewership. doubly saddening to see how DS9 -- my favorite Trek other than TOS -- began to lose it for us. :(

some of the people wanting to see it more then once either previously not trek fans or
had lasped and hadnt been interested in watching trek for years.

Squiggyfm's graph would indicate that "Trek" success depends greatly on its appeal to the general populace. There are people who are fans, who will see the film once or twice, and then there are the hardcore fans who will see it a gazillion times. However, hardcore fans are, again, a relatively small segment of the population. We cannot prop its success by ourselves.

As for the whiners ... well, some people just need to whine to feel superior and good about themselves. How sad.

The hardcore trekkie didnt make the movie a success, but we certainly helped. Take me for instance ;) I took two groups of people to see the movie, both groups had zero interest in the movie. Everyone enjoyed it and went on to tell people that they knew about the movie. I do think that trekkies got the ball rolling since we were the first in theaters and we were the ones spreading that word of mouth

I've mentioned this before, but I heard in Discover magazine that online communities are not "representative," but rather "associative"; i.e, people of like minds tend to gravitate toward each other. It makes for some incorrect conclusion attempts drawn in parallel to the real world.

People should be very careful in that regard; I think some correspondents are so desperate for an angle, that they blow things way out of proportion based on this.

Mike Farley, I'm glad you are still going; congratulations to you! :) Music to my ears.

Trekkies represent a tiny minority of the audience, the success is due to non-fans loving the film and positive word of mouth.

So i take it when it comes out on dvd .JERI will buy lots of copies to make it a smash on dvd sales too. With that thought do you think it can be the no1 dvd smash, as it is on the big screen with slaes

Tsk, you know, I probably will have to buy more than one copy. I would be satisfied with one copy of a director's cut with all the deleted scenes edited back in; but you know those bastiges will not put that version out first. I'll have to buy the one that emerges first and then buy again when the director's cut comes out.

Yeah, it's DVDs that all my money gets spent on - I'll probably end up with multiple copies of Trek.

I think there are a lot of repeat veiwings from the younger crowd kinda like Star Wars gets. That's where the $$$ is.

I saw the movie twice. I know of some fans that did not even go to see it once. Have to wonder if they are fans though. My wife is not even a Star Trek fan and she liked the movie and wants to see it again when we buy the DVD.
