Do you think people care about physical appearance in the same way?

Is there a difference between finding someone's outward appearance repulsive and thinking the same of one's visible inward appearance? Plenty of people are grossed out by gross anatomy - imagine a dating site account using a picture of their open heart/brain surgery as their profile picture. It isn't something you can see just by looking at someone in our real human world (unless they have a medical condition).

I guess people will always find something they have little or bad experience with difficult to appreciate, until they are exposed to it more, or simply stop caring.

OT. In the Wild Cards superheroe novel series normal super heroes are called Aces and super heroes whose powers are not exactly helpful are called jokers. There is one character, a joker, with the power of permanent invisibility. Unfortunately, since she's a joker, only her skin and muscles were invisible. So, you could see all her organs, bones, etc.. She stayed under a cloak most of the time so people weren't grossed out.

I think the key difference is that people will not be put down for their differences appearance in the ways they are now. People will still be respected for however they look and choose to present themselves without judgment.

That said, I think everyone will still always have their preferences. Kira clearly preferred opaque skulls, for example.

I understand Roddenberry's stance & its a nice thought. But the shows are directed at modern viewers, so the characters are geared to what is desirable to society.

Its probably the biggest reason for the Catsuits, painted on Catsuits, Barely there clothing, make-up, male characters dying their grey hair like Chakotay did on Voyager. All the females are thin except for Tilly, who gets fat shamed by fans. And even though Discovery has its issues it does have the most modern casting showing different kinds of sizes & gender & that isn't what alot of fans & viewers want.

Or at least what is seen as desirable.

That's pretty sad. And those same people would likely explode at another person who complained about the show's diversity in other areas (race, sex, orientation, identity).

Well, as someone who is also overweight and on the spectrum, I think Tilly's awesome. And if I make another go at watching DIS, she'll be part of why.

Though DIS is not my Trek of choice, that's not the reason. And regardless, I think it's a good thing that they included a wide variety of characters... now, hopefully, future Treks can create compelling characters, without needing to worry about "checking boxes".

I still maintain the catsuits are the silliest thing previous Trek shows have done and all the actresses who wore them all looked much better when they did get to wear regular Starfleet uniforms.

Yes. Troi actually looked like a professional officer you could take seriously (when she wasn't passing out drunk in "First Contact"). Dax and Kira took a lesson from her and dressed like their male counterparts, with the occasional sexy outfit when it made sense. Seven's natural attractiveness was not blocked by the presence of a uniform, ditto with T'Pol, when she wore the ENT-era coveralls. And thanks to the power of photoshopping, I can also say that Kes looked good in uniform, too.

Finally, though it wasn't about feminine attractiveness in his case, Neelix looked pretty darn slick in Starfleet gold.

Agreed.

There will always be opinions on the aesthetics of appearance. Will they be the same? No. They're not the same as they were 50 years ago. They're not the same as they were 20 years ago. They're not necessarily the same from one individual to another.

I always wanted to see the transparent skull guy..lol
Probably looks a bit like Griffin, the last of the Archanans, from MIB3.

I'd like to see the look on the makeup people's face when you tell them what they need to do :)

It seems like it's also time to rewatch "Is There In Truth No Beauty?"

Going bald is not a disease or mutilation, it's normal aging for many people.

In my more cynical moments, I think people will always be about skinny waifish types, but I went to the burlesque show at Phoenix Fan Fusion this weekend and there were a wide range of body types being ogled. It made me happy.

Regardless of culture or ideology, people are at base just civilized primates whose lizard brain judges people in ways that our higher levels of thought would find offensive.

I find that offensive.

It would be nice if we got passed the ogling stage of our evolution. What are we? Teenagers?
