Do you think LGBT characters will feature more prominently?

No, assuming that the average statistic of 6 percent (less that 1 in 10) continues to hold; greater possibilities if we include the rest of LGBT+ community, however...

What do you mean? 6% gay or lesbian?

Maybe I understood you wrongly...
If they now have a gay man, a lesbian, a bisexual and a transsexual on board that would be too much and would only cause rants and rants from those straight people who miss the 60s.

And as for the "LGBT+ community", the only thing that "LGBT people" have in common is that they are not straight and that they share some interests. I don't like the word LGBT, which is just the PC version of "sexual minorities" and washes away the things that give each group identity and culture.

It's not that a "LGBT person" (whatever that may be) can be a "idenification figure" for the "LGBT community". That would work only on a general level.

As a gay man I can't identify with a transsexual person, at least not more than a straight man or woman could. But lots of straight people assume I should because I'm gay.

I get some of what you're saying ihno, but I've always had an inclusive attitude towards the LGBT community. We're stronger together than apart. While a trans person and I have different issues in some ways, many of our experiences overlap. I can identify with a trans character better than I could a cis straight character. But with good writing and acting we should all be able to relate to people different from us.
If written well it should be easier for a cis person to relate to a human trans character than Vulcan, Klingons and other aliens.

Working together and having a community is important of course and in my country there is a common movement as well of which I'm part of. I did my thing for Queen and country ;) and I know some gay, lesbian, trans people who see it likewise. We're still groups with different cultures that should not get lost over the fashinable abbreviation LGBT. And it is because I know some trans people to know that it is a totally different experience to be trans in comparison to be gay.

Let's hope for good writing. :D

I just don't see the trans vs gay experience as that different.
We both are hated by the same people. We both have to live in hiding, go thru a coming out process.
Many trans people are also gay or bi.
I just don't see any advantage to a harsh seperation between gay and trans communities. We are different, but we can stand together all the same, and I think we're all better for it.

I had my Coming Out in 1990. Most of my knowledge about trans people comes from them. I know some very well, others not so well and there is indeed a bisexual woman amongst them. What I write comes from my experience from working together with trans, bisexual and other gay people.

And from that I know that my life experience is much different from the experiences of trans people. But I don't "hate" "difference".

I don’t think I have the slightest idea how it feels to be in the “wrong body” or how it feels to be the “right one” eventually. Or how it feels – when you are early in the process and take hormones - if you go shopping and are afraid that somebody says “Mr.” to you and not “Mrs”, or what you do with your male genitals when you already have breasts in a public bath etc. etc.

There are things in common of course but a gay coming out is a piece of cake compared to a sex change. When I had my coming out I was finished with the matter afterwards. But trans people have the major journey still waiting at that point and it’s one that takes several years.

Where did I write about „harsh seperation“? Maybe you read a bit too much into it. Is there a debate in the US? I'm from Germany and I criticized the word LGBT, not the fact the word describes. In my city like in most cites in Germany gays, lesbians and transsexuals share a community and work together but each also have and need their own space and niches.

Being gay, lesbian, transsexual etc. is more than being discriminated and being a minority.
And I don’t think that differences are bad (again), I appreciate it very much and am not afraid of people that are "different" from me. And being acknowledged as a group, not just being a part of a “bigger community”, is still necessary.

And sometimes that gets overlooked by the "LGBT" rhetoric, which - esp. if it comes from straight people - reminds me of yesterday's sexual-minority-talk.

There are differences in experiences, especially for trans people since our process is a lot more visible. But I really think we need to stick together. Especially right now and especially in the US. To some straight people we're all the same and basically interchangeable to a lot of them. The last thing we need to do is be divided.

I hope they replace Chekov with a female character. And why she shouldn't be Bisexual?
Or they make something like in STARTREK 3 Search on Mr Spock and let Chekov die but let him come back the vulcan mind transfer - and his new boby is a female one. Chekov is dead, long life Chekov.

They should let Chekov die at a sneak attack by the Klingons which brings Federation and the Empire into a war. That would fit very well to the time line. Then Walter Koeing could have a special appearance as Chekos Grandfather - as a modern Jewish Rabbi who make the funeral. That would very moving.

Do I think LGBT characters will feature more prominently?

Painfully due to the christian extremists that just got "elected" to high office in the US they won't.:(:weep::wah:
They won't even be allowed on television at all since they're already in the process of making it illegal to be LGBTQ. Our new government is extremely homophobic with a despicable VP who advocates conversion therapy.

To be brutally honest, I doubt this show will even be made now anyway since it'll be deemed "evil" by the christian extremists that have been put in charge of the US.

The current political climate is why now more than ever we need to see the utopia of Trek's future with LGBT characters fully integrated with the main cast.

Star Trek has a history of challenging the political climate and right now is exactly its chance to shine.

I've argued in this thread against tokenism and still would, but society has seemingly changed overnight for the worse and we need to challenge ideas I had believed long dead.

Even within our own fanbase the vehemence against a gay lead has been stunning in places, just scroll through some of the youtube comments for the trailer. I can't imagine a more apt time for this to happen.

True.

But sadly the christian extremists have already started their grand plan in motion to eliminate everything non-christian.

It's a shame that the TNG-onwards shows PTB didn't have the backbone the ones for the original series had.
They actually hand the guts to have a diverse crew in time period where that kind of stuff was looked down upon. TNG-onwards (especially ENT which was made between 2001–2005) could of had LGBT characters but they were to spineless and fearful of losing advertisers and viewers.

The FCC has no say on webseries.

Discovery is a webseries.

Safe.
