My Dr Who restoration DVD collection has paid diviends today due to how on streaming services they are either removing specific episodes or cutting them up into smaller versions, so yeah i still collect dvd or br box sets of tv shows, and i like 60s/70 and 80s shows from the Uk box sets, shows like Man in a Suitcase, The Avengers, The new Avengers, Sherlock Homes(Jeremy Brett),Twilight zone(original), The Outer limits(original), Rockford files, The Sweeney.......to name a few off the top of my head.

When I grew up "Blu-ray" was always such a rich people thing. And I guess mostly out of spite I still don't buy them, which is a shame since nowadays all cool features get released on Blu-ray only. But if I am completely honest the concept of watching an episode from 1995 in 4K is just incredibly silly to me.

Back in my "wee little kid's days" I went shopping with my mum one saturday morning. We went to an "Allkauf", which had a seperate little store included, where you could buy records, audio-cassettes and VHS-Cassettes. I had 40 DM to spend, so I grabbed two VHS-Cassettes of "the Transformers" - "Die Rückkehr von Optimus Prime (erster Teil)" and "Der Alptraum-Planet". Runtime: Roughly 24 minutes (each tape). Both costed 19,95 DM - which would be 10,27 Dollars, or 10,20 Euros.

Today, you get for 19,95 Euro Season 1, 3 and 4 of the original Series on DVD and can buy 3,5 Scoops of Ice-Cream in Bochum or 2,46 scoops of Ice-Cream in Berlin, Munich or all the other bigger cities.

And yes, I still collect DVDs, Blu-Rays, will update soon on the latest technology, since one doesn't get DVDs from the shows, one would like to watch, anymore, but only 4k-Blu-Rays (with normal blu-rays), so I can watch the whole Marvel-Series and some Star Wars.

I kind of wish that were true. At least over here, some shows get released in DVD only. It’s even more frustrating when the first few seasons come out in blu-ray and then they switch to DVD only.

But at least it’s less frustrating than when they just stop releasing later seasons altogether.

Indeed. There are a couple of shows I have that dropped blu and went dvd only. (In theory, there's multi-region disks, but I've had problems with one or two of those).

The ones where they don't finish the series are annoying though (and I've had a few of those too:( )

Wanna switch? In Germany, at least, the shows I'd like to see, are "4K-Blu-Ray/Blu-Ray" bundle only.

My eyes are not great, so I don't see much difference between DVD and BD, so whatever format something is available in is fine with me.

I remember being dazzled by the difference between VHS and the new Laserdiscs. DVDs were bettwer than LDs to my amazement. After that it all seems the same to me.

My mum and stepdad still collect DVD and Blu-Ray. We lose power just about every time the weather isn't perfect (slight exaggeration but seriously we lose power a LOT) and most of the time when we get it back the internet stays down for a foolsihly long time after the power comes back, so we won't be able to watch thigns. Thus, DVD and Blu-Rays are the solution.

I do notice some difference, but it isn't the quite of quantum leap I saw between VHS and DVD. It's difficult to quantify sometimes as well because Blu-ray players often upscale DVDs anyway. I'm also conscious that I have a fairly bog standard BR player and that when I eventually get something super-duper the difference may be even more noticeable.

Whether I'll ever go 4K is up for debate.

Yeah, I have a 4k Smart TV, but the BD player doesn't do 4K. Not sure it matters to me at this point.
