Beams can attenuated to a narrow focus, more damage dealt to a single point on a ship. Wide angle diminishes the effectiveness of damage on a single target but puts considerable pressure on the shielding of numerous systems, sorta like a stun setting.

Bolts are concentrations of energy delivered at a rapid rate that are meant to overburden shielding control systems by forcing the shielding systems to constantly have to jump between one system or another. Eventually the excessive redirecting of energy between systems will use more power than the ship can yield for shield use, then down goes the shields.
 
Like many things in Trek, warp-speed combat between starships never made much sense to me. Unless the both ships are moving in exactly the same direction and speed, they would only ever be within weapons range of one another for hundredths or thousandths of a second in passing.

Doesn't make watching the Enterprise beat down a Klingon cruiser any less fun, though. ;)
 
Yep. Trek space combat is like zero-G ballroom dancing. Near impossible but that wouldn't stop network programming chiefs from greenlighting a series based on it and millions would watch.
 
When you have FTL sensors, I wouldn't be surprised if their FTL RADAR works in similar ways.
Getting off subject a little, FTL sensors if using subspace radio pause/echo, should only detect things that "bounce" subspace radio waves. The list probably includes large gravity sources and warp bubbles around ships (and maybe their artificial gravity systems) to name two. YMMV :).

I wouldn't be surprised if objects of significant mass leave some sort of imprint onto certain layers of Subspace that can bounce Subspace Radio signals back to their source. Especially given how much mass a typical StarShip has; how many metric Tons of mass is the Constitution Class naturally, much less the Galaxy Class? That's before you factor in using Anti-Grav for Planetary & basic manuevers in space along with Impulse Drives. Then there's the fact that they have various types Warp Fields to reduce inertial mass for STL maneuvering with impulse & FTL manuevering.
