Do you play games with "walkthroughs?"

I have noticed in the past year or so a massive increase in video-walkthroughs, both amateur and professionally produced. Video walkthroughs? A game has to be awesomely bad for you to need to use one of those. Their prevalence suggests they get a lot of traction.

I disagree, I enjoy watching youtube let's play's

I think that most really good games never require you to look at a walkthrough.

Agreed, though sometimes I have a d'oh moment where I missed something obvious and due to the size/complexity of a level end up losing the plot. Then when I see it in a walkthough, it's a facepalm because it was pretty obvious.

Nintendo is apparently trying to patent an in-help game system that would either give you a clue or take over the game to get players through tough spots. I think this would be terrific as I hate pausing a game to go searching for a decent walkthrough on the web and risk spoiling later segments of the game.

I prefer a visual in the form of a video or at least screenshot-based walkthrough. It's a lot easier to avoid spoilers as I can just stop watching before getting to that bit and sometimes people lack in descriptive power.

Also, there are tough parts of Boom Blox where you're trying to take down a structure with the least amount of hits -- a video of someone else doing this is the best way to see how it's done.

I'm with most people in here: If I get really stuck, I will look to a walkthrough, otherwise I try to tough it out. My personal standard is if I'm stuck for a couple days of trying a lot, or if I'm stuck for about a week of trying occassionally, I'll resort to a walkthrough.

However, there are just some missions where walkthroughs don't help... for example, there is a Nod mission in Command and Conquer 3 where it literally comes down to "You need to get to this location at a certain time or you're dead." I have yet to even finish the mission, much less the campaign, because I hate missions where surviving each leg of the mission is dumb-luck.

well, the lets plays aren't all about just being walkthroughs, really, i started watching them with a play-through of Mischief Makers for nostalgic reasons, and the commentary had me rolling around laughing

Are these by one particular person or do you mean generally? I'd be interested in any links because I enjoy the Angry Video Game Nerd, so similar style commentaries are always a treat.

well, it's no AVGN but only one person on youtube has a lets play of Mischief Makers, and if you like AVGN, go to screwattack.com and look up Captain S

I never used them. Back in the day, when games were hard, the only walkthroughs around were just tips your friends had. Nowadays, the games are just too easy and so I never get stuck.

If I get stuck I'll look up a walkthrough.

I actually can't remember the last RPG I played that I didn't read a walkthrough when I was playing. Normally after playing it for a bit I'll get the urge to look at a walkthrough to mainly check out the side quests and also to see how much I have left to go. I have a much shorter attention and patience span with RPGs that makes me willing to go to a walkthrough rather quickly. With strategy games (what I play mostly) I have to be seriously stuck and have tried over and over again that I can't see how I can beat it before I look up a walkthrough or venture onto forums for mission tips.
