I always kind of figured (and I thought I'd heard it somewhere fairly reliable) that it was the chance to be on a sitcom with a big sitcom star. That's not a bad career move for an actress who doesn't want to be typecast, or so it seems to me. She'd still have six years of Trek under her belt.

She didn't get the gig on Becker until the DS9 negotiations were over.

However, I just did a bit more research regarding those negotiations. I didn't realize she had been paid less from the start of DS9 and was just trying to get equal pay. And, Paramount screwed her over when she was on Becker, too.

I don't blame her for more-or-less leaving acting after that experience.

Kindly disregard my previous rants. It'll take me time to readjust my attitude toward Jadzia/Farrell - but it seems I need to.

What a great thread. We've established that the Jadzia Dax supporters seem to outnumber those with a grudge against the character, AND inspired someone to develop a newfound understanding and sympathy towards the actress who played her. Bravo! :)

Which is exactly why I said we shouldn't base opinions of these people based behind the scene info we aren't apart of. Besides, the post is what we think of Ferrell as Dax, not how we view Terry Ferrell personally.

BTW, I know putting "fans" in quote was needlessly harsh. I'm pretty sure Ferrell feels that way when people that don't know her personally cast judgement on her. Tight shoes, indeed.

I wouldn't say I love her or hate her.

I like her just fine. I didn't consider Dax to be a pivotal character on the show...and so didn't consider taking a dose of sleeping pills or anything when Terry Farrell decided to leave...but I like her just fine. I thought she did a good job and was a decent actress in the role.

Some people like to pretend that they can separate the artist and the work so easily. Maybe some can - and maybe that's a good thing they should be congratulated for, and maybe context is important in judging a work, in which case they are missing something. As for me, I'll admit to having a mind that blurs the lines between my reality and my preferred fiction from time to time - in which case, how I feel about Farrell (spelled correctly - something you might want to do for someone you're hellbent on defending to the exclusion of polite consideration for the person you've defended her to :p) bears on how I feel about Jadzia.

I can, at least, admit that I was probably wrong - and had already done so before this little follow-up from you.

Loved her, but I like Ezri better. Overall there's nothing wrong with either of the Dax's though :)

To those who prefer Ezri (and I don't mean this critically): why? Was it that they fleshed out who Ezri was separate from Dax more? Or is it something else?

Well, you can see my reasons from my post earlier in the thread. I found Jadzia to be too perfect, and therefore flat, whereas Ezri was more quirky and believeable.

Well, I can't speak for others, but it's not necessarily that I like Ezri more. I think I just like Nicole deBoer a little bit more than Terry Farrell. I just consider her a slightly better actress. It also helps that I find her more attractive. :shifty:

Same for me on all counts, but I did like Ezri more, I just found her to be a mire likable character, nicer personality, etc.

Hate is too strong, but I'm indifferent. A character like Dax should have been much more interesting - it's not just the acting either. The writing was unimaginative and didn't even begin to delve into the possibilities the character posed.

I didn't like Ezri any better - same problems, failing to deliver on the potential.

Thanks for the insights. I always found Terry prettier, but being gay I' not sure if my opinion counts the same as you two. ;)

I did feel like they explored who Ezri, as an individual, was more in season seven than they did Jadzia (separate from Dax) in all six seasons she was in.

Well as a straight male I have to agree with you Praetor. Terry Farrell was gorgeous (and still is) and in my opinion a very fine actress.
