Do You Know Of Fans That Were Introduced To Trek Through DS9?

I have never met or read about any fan who was first introduced into Star Trek thru DS9.

Have you?

I am one of those fans.

DS9 was my first Trek series I've watched. I had recently watched Babylon 5 and after hearing all the DS9 vs B5 comments and the fact that I wanted a new Sci-Fi series to watch I decided to start with DS9.

I had previously avoided all Trek due to it's size (and that I didn't really know how all the series fit into the timeline since I felt it wasn't something I could just jump into the middle). And the fact Trek can come off as fairly wooden in some spots.

So yeah, I have met a person who was introduced to Trek through DS9. Me =)

Not to derail the thread, but in your personal opinion how did DS9 stand up to B5?

In a way, I was. I started watching TNG before DS9 (and now VOY), but what made me curious and interested were some clips that a friend of mine sent me. One that I remembered vaguely for months was a battle clip from Sacrifice of Angels. I remember it seemed so cool, and I was curious about it. And a lot of the things he told me about later in TNG and DS9 sounded interesting and different than the image I had of Star Trek as a whole (TOS and TNG's worst were what I thought of when I thought ST), so I got into it, and now I consider myself quite the Niner. :)

They're different shows and I like both. DS9 stands up well. It's more polished and has better stand alone episodes which makes it better to pick and choose episodes to watch. It's overall story is good and more optimistic than B5 so I guess it's a choice of taste.

Actually I know two people who got their start with Trek through DS9: both of whom are military history professors. The secretary of my department gave them each a copy of the first season of DS9 and it became their favorite because they found it "the most realistic Trek series".

Me.

Well, maybe not literally: I first watched TNG on TV when I was in my early teens; but only season 1 aired back then in my country. I liked it, but I didn't take it too seriously. Years later, I started watching DS9; most of season 1 was so so, but "Duet" and the Bajoran/Cardassian storylines really hooked me; I fell in love with the show, and that's what got me into Star Trek in general.
