Do you get the feeling everyone wanted to like ST?

Obviously not only Trekkies are seeing this movie...with the current numbers we are seeing. It feels to me like there were a lot of latent fans out there who WANTED to like ST but were not getting the presentation they wanted. Abrams stuck a chord, and now we have the success of Star Trek 2009.

I think a lot of old fans are seeing the movie. I myself was okay with the film, but feel that it simply created a nuTrek, one that I don't want. Thats my personal opinion anyway.

I believe you are right.

The yearning for a brighter, better tomorrow transcends generations.

However, the franchise had become stale and old. And, other movies and series became darker & grittier over the past few years. Every message sent by Hollywood about the future painted a bleak one, where we would be either: a) destroyed by our own robots, b) destroyed by our own failing, c) destroyed by alien life, d) live in a post-nuclear world or c) something equally bleak.

I think Abrams recognized that unsatisfied yearning for a brighter future, that's why he's struck a chord with so many people.

Latent fans are abundant and I believe this new movie has captured the joy and spirit of the original like no other incarnation.

The last time Trek captured a wide audience (not money--but love) was Trek 4. That's right--the whale movie.

There is no comparison to the original show. The cultural impact of the old show in comparison to any spin-off is small.

"Beam me up Scotty" "I'm a Doctor not a _____ Jim! "Live Long and Prosper."
No comparison to Picard's lines- "Make it so?"----"engage?"
As good and sometimes great as TNG was---it never captured the world and the culture like TOS. Money is not the only measure----many people watched TNG based on joy from TOS.
