Do you get carded?

What age do you look?

I'm 37. I've been told I look a decade younger. I often get carded, but I didn't tonight when I ordered a drink.

I was actually out at a bar with some friends on Friday night. We were at the bar and the bartender asked me friend, who only recently turned 21, for her ID. I handed her mine and the bartender just waved me off. :D

Just something I was wondering, do many people here frequently get carded for stuff?

Depends on whether I have facial hair. I usually keep a trim goatee and on weekends it's a shadow. Facial hair? Hit and miss on getting carded. Clean shaven? Carded for sure. I'm 24.

I'm 27. Someone last year was saying "What age are you? 20" I just told him yes to shut him up. It seemed easier than having the "you look younger" conversation :)

I just recalled a story an old friend once told me years ago about this one time she and her family went to a restaurant. Mind you, she was only about 15 or 16 at the time. She went ahead and ordered a drink in front of her parents. The waiteress didn't even ask for her card UNTIL it was time for them to pay the check. Her father being an ex-cop told her there was nothing they could do since the law states they should have asked BEFORE giving the drink, not afterwards.

Is it illegal in the USA for minors to drink even if their parents are present? Even if it's with a meal rather than in a bar?

Wow, that's really harsh.

It varies widely, according to the State.

In every state, as far as I know, it is illegal to order and consume alcohol within a bar under the age of 21, no matter the age of parents.

In a good portion of states, however, it is legal to serve alcohol to a person over the age of 18 but under the age of 21, assuming that the server of the alcohol is a parent or legal guardian.

Over here' it's 18. Although there are some stores such as one called Sommerfields which will card everyone they assume to be under 25, just to be sure they're over 18

I've always looked younger than I am. Now I am 24 and a PhD candidate but at my department new people mistake me for an undergrad. And also, at another institution where I teach, at the beginning of each semester students approach me thinking I am a student there as well and we chat. And then they look at me wide-eyed when I enter the classroom as their teacher. That is fun. :D

At the few pubs in London I went to that did card be, they usually waited until I was almost done my drink and then asked me my age. When I told them 20, they asked to see ID since they were supposed to card anyone who looked under 21. Now as much as I didn't care, this seems like a pretty ineffective system if I was under 18. First off, I could lie and say 22 and they might not card me. Second, even if they did try to card me, I'd say I forgot my ID and go to a different bar. I'd still get a drink out of it, even if I wouldn't get multiple drinks.

I just went to the grocery store and picked up some Jack. Three store employees were at the check stand when I was being rung up...and I never got carded. I think the law around here is that they have to ask for ID if they think you look younger than 35...

I'm only 22!

I'm 24 and I haven't been card since...forever. I mean I have but it's like to confirm a purchase with my debit card. I've never been carded when buying alcohol for example.

Actually to start it off let me describe this. I was pretty average height until I was about ten, perhaps an inch taller then the other guys. Then I started growing something fierce. To put it short I've been able to get into 15-rated movies since I was eleven without trouble. My brother it's been even easier since he got tall even quicker, not to mention the fact that when he was 13 he had already a very deep voice.

And there's an amusing story as well. Once I was accused of having bought alcohol to a minor. The police had approached my father (rather embarresed as a matter of fact since my father was at the time a wellknown profile for against this sort of crime) about a person saying I did this, and he and I go into the policestation for them to inerrogate me about it.

Now this is Sweden and nobody really beleived I did this, so the interrogation was just in the police officers room. We quickly surmised that the time at which the alleged crime had taken place I was across the nation and in a movie theater watching X-men. I believe I even still had the ticket since I have a habit of collecting them, and I also had three very trustworty witnesses. So of course it was quickly dismissed.

But the real kicker, and what makes this connected to this: this was in 2000, I turned 16 in november of that year. And you can't buy alcohol until you're 20 here (well the heavy stuff at least). So this person who'd accused me only had a vague idea of who I was and clearly thought I was way older, or at least thought I could get a way with such a thing.

Nowadays I've finally almost caught up to appearance. I only look a few years older then I am, but then again I always have a beard these days.

Sort of. I'm 14 and tried to get into a 15 rated movie recently, however they asked for ID, so I just told them I didn't have any, then left the cinema.

I have actually never been carded. I don't buy a lot of alcohol, for starters. I buy most of it at the store in my very small hometown. The owner of the store, who also works the register, knows me and my family well. He knew when my birthday was, and what year I turned 21. So naturally he doesn't feel the need to card me.

But most recently, I went to a store here in Berkeley to buy some alcohol (for a friend, not for myself) and they didn't card me there either. I'm 22 now. Some of the people in the place I live now thought I was a freshman at the beginning of the year (though said individuals aren't terribly bright). I can't believe I look THAT old...

Wow, major thread bump! But I wasn't around here back in December, so I'll play.

Yes, I sometimes still get carded. I'm 25, but look a bit younger. Alas, it seems to be happening less and less... of course, me buying alcohol is also happening less and less (I may not even have a drink today -- and it's St. Paddy's Day!), so that might be why it feels like I'm not getting carded as often.

Also, the legal age here in Canada is 19, and I probably do look at least that old to most people. Still, I like to think I'm aging very gracefully (:p)... and every time I do get carded, I consider it a compliment.

The local Wal-Mart has this "If you look under 40" (I'm 58) crap they can card you by store policy. One of my 50 some thing friends went with me and she had two two cans of beer with her groceries. When the store clerk ask for her ID she told the clerk Wal-Mart was out of it's mind and simply turned, walked away and left every thing there.

I'm 25. I get carded once in awhile, usually if I've just shaved and/or am wearing my hat. Shaving makes me look younger, and the hat covers up my prematurely thinning hair.
