Do You Feel Like You're Living In The Wrong Century?

I'm too wedded to my mod-cons to truly want to live in a more primitive age.

Having said that, I do have a few anachronistic habits, not least in how I dress sometimes. For instance, I wore a 3-piece suit (with double-breasted waistcoat, no less) & pocket watch to work today. But generally, I like having technology around, so no I don't really feel like I'm in the wrong century. I'd happily holiday as a member of the elite in any of the following time periods: Edwardian or Victorian England, Renaissance Italy, Mediaeval Northern Europe, Ancient Rome or Greece.

To be honest with you, I do feel like I'm living in the wrong century. I don't want this to go straight away to TNZ, but there are too much hate, wars, much more along down on the list!

I wish that I could live in the right centuries like 23rd century or 24th century! That's where we could live in the peace without having to fighting over nonsense! STUPID!
Yeah, because war and hate will be gone then.

Star Trek is not real life.

Did I mention Star Trek in my post?

All I wanted to do is born in the right centuries that is without hate, wars. Many things along down the list that you can name it.

It would be nice if I live from that centuries. I was targeted by skinhead people for no reason in my earlier life. That's no excuse! :scream:

I'm too stuck with being comfortable with having mod-cons as well, but part of me is somewhat attracted to the Viking Age, though it's probably an attraction to the zeitgeist (I think that's the word) of the time, a passionate hardy people, willing to brave whatever nature could throw at them, but I guess my mindset probably doesn't have the violent nature that would be required to fight in any skirmish of battle needed.

Perhaps if we modify the question to a scenario where we could switch between a persona of someone in our past, and our current selves?

Still, there are times when work and television and traffic and shoppers drive me to long for those few short days of the year when the family packs up and goes wilderness camping.
Me too. But if you're anything like me, when you get home from the camping trip you really appreciate things like electricity, air conditioning and a comfortable bed. :)

Thats why camping trips are regulated to 2 days only..max 3....and no more.

Exactly - long enough to get away from the crazies, but not long enough to ... get a rash or something

If I could choose any time period to live in, it would be either Colonial, or Pioneer-era America. I just love everything about those periods in time.

You like minor infections resulting in major amputations without anesthetic!? :wtf: You like slavery? Dysentery? A nearly complete lack of bathing?

To each his own, I guess.

Aye, to each his own. In fact, I'd be rather happy, if you left me alone, when I get there. ;)

I would prefer to live in a time when the space frontier is really opening up to the common man. Whenever that is...

On a related note, I once read somewhere (years ago not a clue where it was now) that prehistoric man "worked" an average of 20 hours a week to get by. We sure have come a long way with technology!;)

With over 400 years of foreign subjugation and racism faced by older generations as late as my aunts and uncles, I think this century is a fine time to be a minority in America (and in many other countries for that matter)

However, I always wondered how I'd be treated in an 1800's America, or England for that matter, as manong Filipinos were only beginning to migrate to the far stretches of the world. We were once considered an exotic people! ^_^

I absolutely reject the romanticised notion of a 'golden age' at some always conveniently indeterminate point in the past. Sure, there are problems now - there will be problems in any age - but overall, taking account of the last ten years or so, we as a civilisation have never had it so good. Certainly it has been the most prosperous time ever for Britain, and finally in a way that isn't just the aristocracy profiting while the peasants see none of it. We're gaining ground against racism, sexism, and class divides, we are supported by a relatively reliable welfare state if we get into trouble, our streets are the safest they've ever been. Medical science has dramatically increased the expected lifespan and provided treatment for a huge range of conditions. None of my generation have been conscripted to war.
We are, generally, doing better than at any time in history. I have no desire to be born earlier than I was.

Now, if the question is would I rather have lived in the future, that's a tougher question to answer because it becomes conjecture. Overall, history suggests we will continue advancing scientifically and socially. But you could also land yourself being born in one of the 'low points' when humanity gets off track for a bit, and as time marches on, these tend to get more and more dramatic.

While I can't vouch for the specific number, I believe the idea is accurate. We work more than our primitive ancestors. Further, when hunter-gatherers tribes switched to agriculture, the amount of work increases. The trade off for the extra work? A food supply that is both more reliable and provides more food.

Sorry about the brief foray into seriousness . . .
