Do you ever forget to eat?

^ I'm that way with pecans. If you gave me a big bowl of nothing but pecans (lightly salted with sea salt), there will not be a single pecan left in the bowl. I guarantee it.

I'm gonna echo this sentiment as well. I often plan other events in my day around the times I intend to have my meals.

Also, if I go a few hours without eating... I will get hungry, and I can't really ignore my hunger.

Believe it or not, if you actually DO ignore it for about 30 minutes, it goes away.

It really does.

Now for those of you who can't go 4 hours without thinking about your next meal, I really don't see the difference between that and a smoker.

But why would you do that? If you're feeling hungry, it's because your body needs food. Hunger doesn't happen arbitrarily.

Well, it is better for your metabolism to eat every 3 hours or so.

And as someone who is trying to bulk up and build muscle, I need to be eating 6-7 meals a day.

No, you're totally right, and I'm just playfully picking on Trek-geeks who'd rather eat a double bacon cheese burger than Jolene Blalock.

Not smoking doesn't directly contribute to dying :p

I'm one of these people who makes sure to eat regularly. Only very rarely do I forget a meal, and that would only be because I'm not doing a lot during that day. If I'm doing a lot, and don't eat, hope that you're a person I like, because my temper gets very short when starving. :klingon:

Why not both?

You may be right -- actually, on some occasions where I've been too busy to eat, and I've gotten hungry, I have noticed that my hunger will subside somewhat, but I don't think it ever completely goes away.

As for the smoker comparison, well, we need to ingest food regularly to sustain ourselves; I can't say the same thing about inhaling toxins. If you're talking about people who overeat (people who are addicted to eating, you could say), then the comparison might have some validity, but just because someone thinks about their next meal every few hours, it doesn't mean they're an overeater.

Your body goes into a starvation mode if it goes too long without food. It prepares for the long haul by slowing down your metabolism. The downside is that you'll stop burning fat calories (your body stores them for later, assuming it won't be getting nutrients from food) and you'll start burning muscle instead.

Ah yes... I recall learning stuff like that in my high school science and gym classes. It's all coming back to me now... :D

Anyway, it's all the more reason to eat regularly -- and healthily, of course.

That is a bit of a kill joy, though I've yet to understand why the body, when in foodless mode, would burn muscle, it best source for new food, rather than fat, the stuff it has stored up for when it is hungry.

Can anyone explain this to me? Why do we have fat if it's not to use when we are without food? Why would the body start to burn muscle when that's basically the same as being so hungry that you break your fishing rod over your knee.

Well, muscles require a lot of nutrients to maintain themselves. They cannot exist without food. Fat, on the other hand, doesn't really require extra nutrients once it's been formed.

Right, but isn't the reason we store fat is so that we can use it when we have a lapse in food? That's what I've never understood. Every health expert I've ever read, met or chatted with has said what you just said. Don't go into starvation mode.

I don't doubt that they know what their talking about, but we all learned that fat is stored food, kept energy, whatnot. We all know, that should we run out of food, we'll likely need muscle to get new food. The fat we've stored will not help us in finding new sources of food.

So why does the body, when faced with starvation, first burn off its life support system before it burns up its fuel reserves?

Because muscle can be broken down more readily for immediate energy needs. Eventually you will start to burn your excess fat, but muscle is easier in the short term.

Okay, but shouldn't my body realize that it's killing the fisherman so it can eat the bait?

Nobody ever said evolution was perfect. This is simply the way it works.

But I would think there must be a better reason than simplicity. It seems that would be a deal-breaker trait, to kill off the muscle before the fat.

Well, the truth is, your body doesn't NEED that much muscle to survive. Your body isn't preparing to hunt or track down a wild boar to eat. It doesn't care how you get your food; it just does what it needs to do to keep from dying. Fat will burn slowly over time as it doesn't really require food to be maintained. Muscle needs fuel to be maintained, and it can't get that fuel from fat stores; it can only get it from an outside food source.
