The thing is, TOS is even more self-contained than Voyager and TNG, and had fewer episodes, looser world building and a LOT less background material (e.g. "none"). On the other hand, the series that immediately followed Voyager was set in the 22nd century and basically used First Contact as part of its background.

So Discovery has a choice: either set itself some years after Enterprise, or set itself some years after Voyager. They chose the first option, probably because the fictional history between Enterprise and TOS is large enough to fit ALOT of interesting stories.

Which leads us to wonder (and expect) that some day we'll get a TV series based on the adventures of the Enterprise-C. The butthurt fan rage will be completely through the roof when the new version of the ENT-C utterly fails to look like the Yesterday's Enterprise version and doesn't recycle the Monster Maroon uniforms.

I always thought it was ridiculous that they kept the TWOK Uniforms as long as they did. But -- unless they have a Pike spin-off -- I think DSC will be the last prequel.

I don't know why other than a gut-feeling. The next series to come out after DSC ends will be well into the 2020s. By which time we'll start seeing people who grew up with TNG in charge (meaning it was part of their childhood). DSC is the first Star Trek series to be created by someone born after TOS premiered. Bryan Fuller was born in 1969.

And Discovery will be looked back upon fondly.

You never know. ENT was the hated redheaded bastard stepchild of the franchise for well over a decade and now it's getting more love, attention and respect than ever.

Perhaps I should say that Discovery will be looked back upon more fondly than whatever the new show is.

It's almost like CBS and Paramount have spent the past 2 years going, "We will reference our franchise-killing series until you LIKE IT."
Enterprise didn't kill the franchise, it just happened to be the one in the hospital when the franchise finally slipped into a long expected coma for a few years. If you look at the Nielsen's ratings of all the shows of the modern era, there was a continual downward trend of all the spin-off shows after TNG that was smooth enough to ski down, with ratings spikes for premieres, finales, and big event episodes. I love me some DS9, but it was as much a part of the death spiral as Voyager and Enterprise were, just it was more pronounced by the time of the latter two series. TNG was a ratings monster by comparison, and the only one on a continual uptick, and probably the only time this franchise is going to achieve that kind of mainstream success.

This sounds...familar.

"The Neilson Ratings of all recent Star Trek episodes"? The word "recent" needs to be changed to something else. It even needed to be changed to something else back in 2005...

But, otherwise, yeah. If ENT had premiered in 1997, a year after First Contact, it would've run seven seasons for sure.

When you're the only Trek series that's both a part of recorded history and canon in both timelines that gives you at least some bragging rights. Haters are gonna hate, but Michelle Yeoh, William Shatner AND Chris Pine studied the missions and career of Captain Archer in school and at Starfleet Academy.

Top that, Janeway. :p
