Well, maybe I live in a police state, but here it's illegal to go around without some sort of photographic ID (ID card, driver license, or passport). Yeah, probably the cops will let you go away with a warning and a slap on the wrist, but technically they can take you to the police station to verify your identity.

Personally, I have always my ID, DL and two debit cards on me (in the event of one malfunctioning), plus some assorted cards (library, clubs, etc).

Yes, I do. I carry my passport around with me. In my country you're sort of required to carry ID. However, I never did until I needed an ID to go with my public transport ticket. Back then I got stopped by cops twice and while they behaved pretty assholish about me not having any ID, they didn't really do anything about it, either. (We have obligation to register in this country, anyway, so it's a bit abundant.)
I've never been carded when buying alcohol, even when I wasn't legally allowed to, yet.

Not always. Sometimes if I'm just going somewhere nearby and I'm not planning to drive or drink, I won't bother bringing my purse.

As for the whole wallet thing, I do sometimes take my ID and cc out of my wallet because the thing's a bit of a monster and I sometimes want a small clutch or something to take to a bar. Then of course I forget to put them back, and chaos ensues.

I always have my wallet and that always has my driver's license in it... my college ID is usually in there too.

I always have my driver's license whenever I leave the house. In fact, I always take my handbag (with everything in it) with me, even if I'm just going down the street to the store. You never know what can happen, so I like to be prepared.

I take my (provisional) driving licence with me wherever I go because I get carded all the time. The only places that don't card me are dodgy foreign shops that just don't care, and the shop down the road where I've shown them my ID so many times that they don't bother asking for it now.

Only when I have to; driving, going to the bank, courthouse, things like that. If someone else is driving and I don't have any business dealings that day, I take no identifying information, and pay for everything strictly with cash.

I don't drive anymore, but I still keep my license with me in my wallet at all times out of habit. All of my other cards are in there too... health card, credit and debit cards, etc. Otherwise I'd lose them :p

I always carry my drivers license and a credit card, always. They never leave my wallet and my wallet goes out the door with me. Period.

Do most people carry it just because they carry their wallet/purse with them and they're drivers so have their drivers license in there, or is it a conscious "I want ID with me"?

When I was 16 a friend and I were stopped by police while running for a bus after dark. Apparently there had been a burglary in the area, and they considered the fact that we were running to be suspicious. As neither of us had ID, they detained us for about half an hour while they confirmed our identities.

Haven't left the house without ID since.

Yep.

Required by law to do so here.

I carry my ID card, social security card, Visa, AmEx, health insurance card, blood donor card, .... I want someone to be able to identify my mangled remains when I'm in an accident!

Exactly, above all else you need to be identifiable so people can have a starting point to contact relatives in the event you are unable to communicate because of your condition. Your contact list in your cell phone might not survive.

Medical insurance card: What if you're in an accident or something happens and you need to go to the ER?
Yeah, right. Like the hospital is going to turn you away  Please, be realistic.
No, they won't turn me away, but experience tells me that without proof of insurance 1) unless you're in fatal condition, you're going to the bottom of their list of patients to help and b) they can and will charge you for things as if you had no insurance at all.

Having the proof of insurance makes the whole experience run a lot more smoothly.

At the very least you'll likely have to make a claim with your insurer instead of them being directly billed by the hospital. A big hassle, if nothing else.

When I lived in Italy, I always carried my "sorgiorno" (spelling) papers. My US ID's probably would have been use little, since they were in English.

In the US I always carry a form of ID.
