Do you buy generic brands?

^Agreed. The only store branded thing at Safeway/Vons that is worth it is their version of Del Monte Seasoned Green Beans.

. . . I don't eat a lot of cereal these days but the one that always stuck out as terrible in store brand was the Lucky Charms knockoff. They just weren't even close on the marshmallows.
The real thing is pretty disgusting too. Same for all of those so-called "cereals" that contain more candy than cereal. Eccch.

Some of the Store Brand versions of Lucky Charms isn't too bad around here...still not the same.

I agree 100%.

And it's not even good candy. More importantly, we're talking about something associated with the most important meal of the day.

Even when I was a kid, I proffered stuff like Total, Wheaties, Grape Nuts, etc with barriers for breakfast. Now I'm glad my parents insisted upon it.

I read on a nutrition site you are better off having alot of your calories & proteins in the morning and less and less throughout the day...so having cereal for breakfast really isn't the best way to start the day.

When l go shopping l might buy a few generic brands if they are cheaper than other products on the shelf.
But l do watch out for diffences in taste because some can be quite bad.
Also alot of the generic brands are made overseas so the profits go to these countrys instead of our own.

Barriers? You mean, like little walls or fences in your cereal bowl?

I could never stand those sugar-frosted cereals when I was growing up. I had a sweet tooth like any other kid, but I've never been able to stomach anything sugary before noon.

The lower price is an added bonus, since the store brand HFCS that I've been buying tastes better than canned Coke anyway.

Can anybody explain why canned Coke is so inferior to fountain Coke while competing colas don't taste that much different between fountain and canned versions (fountain Coke Pepsi and the rare RC tastes pretty much the same, canned Pepsi and RC tastes fine BUT canned Coke is barely drinkable)?

It depends on the store.

Hy-Vee has their own store-label products, and they are universally disgusting. Every time I've tried any of their products, it's nasty ... How the hell can you screw up canned corn? Anyway.

Bag N Save's and No Frills's generics are the "Our Family" generic brand, and they are even worse than Hy-Vee's store brand. Even their bottled water tastes awful.

Bakers, however, has a great store brand (sometimes "Kroger" sometimes "Big K"). The only product of theirs that I've tried and it hasn't been as good (or better) than the name brand product is their bottled water. Their store brand is cheap, but doesn't taste that way. Their non-food items (trash bags, toilet paper, etc) are just as good as the name brand as well ... and their toilet paper isn't scratchy. It's better than Angel Soft any day of the week.

I work at Baker's, and I appreciate the compliment. :techman: I like our cereal fruit bars. I like them a lot better than the 'big name' kind (which I think are too dry).

I do buy generic medication when available because of cost (Insurance usually demands generic or pay a higher - in my case a much higher price - for a brand name).

For other items it depends. I'll try the generic. Sometimes they are gross and you see the generic item sitting on the shelf and the name brand sold out.

What I hate about generic, is they make their labels very similar in color and design to the name brand that I sometimes get the generic when I want the name brand. That really ticks me off.

We shop at Aldi for most of our foodstuff, so i would have to say generic...
Their fresh produce and meat are quiet good...
And we mostly get generic/shop-brand stuff at the supermarket...
Heck, i pretty much grew up on generic brands food wise...
And sometimes they do taste better..
