Do vulcan children have emotions

Tcsfan

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
I know vulcans have emotions they just suppress them with meditation and stuff but how dose a 5 month old meditate

P.s I am a new Trekkie so I don't know a lot of stuff

They are taught the techniques during their childhood (there are several references to this in Trek) but as this is a lengthy process they still occasionally show them. The children bullying young Spock in the last movie are a good example of that.

They don't. I doubt that the training for emotional control starts that young. From what we've seen emotional control is a bit dodgy in pre-teen Vulcans.

Do Vulcan babies cry

I know in the last movies Spock cried but he is half human

And it they can not how to thy say they want to eat or they need to be changed

Yeah, in addition to the Vulcan bullies in Trek XI (which itself was based on a scene from TAS) we also saw that Tuvok had so much trouble dealing with his emotions as a teenager he was sent off to spend time with a Vulcan monk.

So yeah, Vulcan babies cry and scream just like human babies.

Re: Do Vulcan babies cry

Yes, Vulcan babies cry. Vulcans still have emotions, they simply hide them. A baby doesn't know how to hide emotions, so they would cry.

That seems logical. The baby has not undergone the programming to repress their emotions.

You'd think it would drive the Vulcan parents crazy though...

Re: Do Vulcan babies cry

This is a good question. Yes, as The Wormhole explained, Vulcans do have emotions, but they are trained not to show them. As babies, they have not been taught and do not yet have the ability to control them. They obviously cannot talk yet but they still do need to be able to communicate to their parents. Like human babies, they do that by crying. They will learn to control their emotions, but that will come as they get older.

Maybe that's why they only have sex once every seven years?

Hmm, what about child birth itself? That can be pretty painful. Does the Vulcan mother successfully suppress the pain, or is it too much and they ended up screaming and crying while giving birth?

Re: Do Vulcan babies cry

Vulcans do have emotions, they choose to repress them. The training for this would begin at a young age, when the child could understand the concepts of discipline and control. When they're born they'd be as emotional as any other infact.

Also since they can't talk, its the only logical means of alerting ones parents to an immediate need :vulcan:

Re: Do Vulcan babies cry

I'm merging this with the other thread about the emotions of Vulcan children.

To expand a little more on what has already been correctly mentioned, some Vulcans (perhaps males only, not sure about females) engage in Kolinahr. According to Memory Alpha:
Kolinahr (ko-li-naar), as a word, described both the Vulcan ritual by which all remaining vestigial emotions were demonstrated as purged, and the mental discipline whereby this state was subsequently maintained. Not all Vulcans were required to make this final journey to pure logic. The duration of kolinahr training was quasi-monastic in nature, and could vary from two to six (or more) years.
Spock went through this at the beginning of The Motion Picture.

I am surprised that anybody hasn't yet pointed out young Tuvok in Gravity, where he has an infatuation with a fellow student that does not share his feelings.

VULCAN MASTER: You reject logic.
YOUNG TUVOK: If I was meant to deny feelings, why was I born with them? Where's the logic in that?
VULCAN MASTER: Hidden for you to find, or in plain sight for you to ignore.
YOUNG TUVOK: You speak in riddles because the truth frightens you.
VULCAN MASTER: You're right, it does frighten me. You're surprised to hear a Vulcan master admit to having emotions?

YOUNG TUVOK: I'm sorry I was born Vulcan!
VULCAN MASTER: Bilak par. Self-pity.
YOUNG TUVOK: Are you cataloguing my emotions?
VULCAN MASTER: What is the source of your self-pity?
<sic>

^^^ That was a cool scene. I was never a big fan of Voyager, but it did have some nuggets of greatness to it on occasion.

Interesting to note that the Vulcan Master is played by Joseph Ruskin, who also played Galt in Gamesters of Triskelion. He never really look like he aged a day.

Since one of the "masters" teaching Spock Kolinahr was a woman, I'd guess females can. In fact she seem to be their leader.

All Vulcans have emotions (except maybe for Kohlinahr graduates), including the kids. I imagine Vulcan children really aren't that different than Human children - and Vulcan adults surely don't expect their kids not to display emotion, any more than Human parents expect their kids to act just like adults. But, Vulcan parents no doubt try to get their kids to keep the emotionalism to a minimum in public, just like Human parents wouldn't want their kid screaming and throwing things in the grocery store.

Good point. Forgot about that. I guess it definitely applies to females as well. :)
