Do "Voyager" and "Enterprise" Get a Better Press?

The fanwank is what makes the 4th season of Enterprise overrated, but it was still good and felt like a hefty shot in the arm. And I wouldn't deem an episode like "Drone" as particularily insulting to intelligence and immature, although Voyager and Enterprise were hamstrung by a stale formular most of the time (likely due to UPN. Didn't they also cancel the promising sounding Nowhere Man as well?).

It is funny that a few people use the term "gratuitous fan-wanking" as a negative. Are they not supposed to plase fans? Granted, 7of9 in a catsuit can be the source of some "gratuitous fan-wanking", but otherwise, it sounds like and argument to make when there is no other argument. :rommie:

IIRC the ratings for those "fan-wanking" episodes weren't particularly good, so they probably didn't please what was left of the general Trek audience.

No episode had a good rating so by that logic I could pull any episodes at random and call them the worst, and then say the ratings are low so that proves it. You have to look at the overall perception of the larger group. People that finally got to watch the show once it moved to other channels and was available in more homes. In most every poll or thread about which season is the best the argument comes down to season 3 with the big Xindi arc or season 4 with so many smaller arcs. Usually the majority goes with season 4 being the best of ENT and one of the best of trek. But, I guess we will always have people who cannot understand how others can like something they don't. If they need to call it "fan-wanking" to be secure in their dislike, I guess that's ok. I never felt to call season 1 of TNG or season 3 of TOS "fan-wank". I just call it my least favorite Trek and move on to something I like better.

I thought Voyager was shite back in the day and after watching it again, I still think it's shite.

As for Enterprise - I might have watched ten episodes in total - it looked like shite but I'd need to see more episodes to be sure.

The "general public" has no idea what Voyager, Enterprise or DS9 even are, and there certainly is little or no "press" on any of the spinoff shows these days. People have heard of Kirk and Dr. Spock and Beam Me Up Scotty. They might be very dimply aware that there was a sequel with the guy from X-Men in it.

If the big JJ Abrams movie is successful, that will be "Star Trek" in people's minds, along with a general awareness that Shatner and Nimoy played those roles before the new guys. The rest of Trek will be largely forgotten outside of the hardcore fandom.

Which is fine, frankly. I've long advocated it was time to wipe the slate clean and start over with a hard reboot.

The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine were both mentioned jokingly on Dexter. And the vast majority sci-fi shows seem relatively obscure to anybody not into sci-fi, and the television networks in America seem to actively want to sabotage them the majority of the time.

I think the cast is easy to connect with and once you do, you are willing to overlook some of the problems with writing. Voyager is the opposite. The cast is so dry it is hard to feel for them.

That's funny. I feel the exact opposite. Now I haven't watched a single episode of Enterprise, but I've watched some TNG and DS9 and the only show I've ever really liked and the only characters I've ever loved are the ones from Voyager. They had it all.

Funny how differently we perceive things, but then it would be a boring world if we didnt. :)

I know this isn't strictly related to the thread, but DS9 was also mentioned (as part of a joke) by a character from "Little Britain" too. Little Britain is quite mainstream here in the UK so despite the joke being somewhat a putdown of the show there does seem to be some knowledge of the shows existence out there somewhere.
