Do TrekBBS users listen to music?

Over at my other fave TV series-based forum, there's a busy and thriving subforum for music discussion. It's not quite as diverse as it could be (mainly rock and pop) but it's a pretty broad range within those parameters, from the well-known to the cult acts.

But there's very little music discussion here. Is it because music is listed as one of the things to discuss in a relatively miscellaneous section of the site? Is it because, for some mysterious reason, Doctor Who fans are more interested in music than Star Trek fans? There do seem to be some demographic differences between the two sites, and it might be interesting to see how musical tastes differ.

If there's any real degree of interest in discussing music, would it make sense adding a music subforum here?

A music forum is something that has been discussed, especially in this thread in QSF which asked specifically for a forum for the musicians here on the BBS, but which I think could incorporate music discussion in itself too (much in the same way the sports forum also includes discussion of posters' fitness). I'm in favour of such a forum, although the main argument against it is the lack of music discussion threads (although of late I have noticed quite a few threads in TV&M and Misc. about music topics).

I think that "if you build it, they will come." The lack of a Music forum is perhaps the greatest hindrance to Music discussion. If you don't know where it should go, if it doesn't look like there's much of it going on in other subfora, then it won't happen because someone who wants to discuss it may not feel comfortable bringing the topic up.

100%. This is why the Gaming forum is attracting threads, I feel, because it's there - this comparison was one of the arguments in favour of having a music forum in that previously mentioned thread. Having a designated, explicitly available place to discuss a topic as broad and big and culturally important as music would only attract more discussion, not less.

I listen to plenty of music, but I usually don't have that much to say about it. If I feel the need to, I hop over to other boards that seem more suited for this sort of discussion (like the Beatles board I frequent).
I think that TV&Media covers too many things at once. A lot of threads vanish from the front page pretty quickly. I'd definetely support a further split-up.

I have very little appreciation of music. Since I got my iPod 3 or 4 years ago my appeciation has improved, but I'm pretty rubbish at exploring it. I certainly couldn't have a meaningful conversation about it!

That in itself is kind of interesting. Did you go from being interested in music when you were younger to kind of putting aside as you got a bit older?

A lot of people I know have found it hard to maintain their active interest in music as they start dealing with adult life. Some just fixate on a certain era (generally what was popular in their high school/university years) and never really move beyond it. And of course a few never really cared what was playing on the radio or in the club.

I don't just listen, I play classical piano as well. But I probably wouldn't visit a Music Forum very often because story- and idea-based stuff like TV and movies are more conducive to discussion, at least to me, while I don't really think about music as something that yields well to words and analysis. It's an experience.

I've never really been interested in music. I'm not sure why. If I equate it to my appreciation of tv it would be like this: I know what I like with tv; I know directors, actors, producers. I know what studios put out what tv, what actors have done before. I can talk about set design, costuming, all that malarkey that we discuss here endlessly in terms of tv and film grammer. I'm happy to explore it, to extrapolate from it. I watch stuff I love. I watch stuff that might grow on me etc. People do all that with music. They buy albums and listen to them until it grows on them, until they know the tracks. None of that ever happened with me with music. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that I can find music irritating. Don't get me wrong, music moves me, when I hear songs I haven't heard for ages it's like visiting an old friend. But, after a while, it grates.

I read an article a few months back about a guy who had no appreciation of music and how rare that was. He said in the article that it almost felt like a confession to say that he didn't really care for music, that a world without music would be no loss to him. That's pretty much how I feel, and some how it feels quite a dificult thing to "admit" to.

I have about 5-6 bands that I listen to all the time. Otherwise, I'm an NPR sorta person.

If you want to talk about Rush or Porcupine Tree, I'm all over it.

Me as well . I like to discuss music every so often on another forum that I'm a member of... it's interesting to see other people's viewpoints about groups and such.

I did a thread over on that forum that's doing pretty well, called 'Which do you prefer: Studio music or Live music?'

It's been an interesting discussion so far.

There are a few bands I listen to mostly all the time most are not Top 40 bands. Currently listening to Bill Champlin's (keyboardist, guitars, lead vocals for Chicago until about a month ago) new solo album 'No Place Left To Fall'. Does an acustic version of 'Look Away' (Chicago's big hit he sang lead on wayyy back in 1988) that is killer.

Yup, that makes sense to me.

I'd be extremely interested in threads about music theory/analysis, should any be created - not because I know much music theory, but because I don't know much, being a self-taught musician and all. I find it a fascinating area of discussion and there's always something new to learn.

I listen to a ton of music. Just not a lot of discussion going on about any of it here. If you want to hear people gush about how Rush is better than air, then you'll get the odd thread here and there, but everything else tends to disappear pretty quickly (aside from the "list" threads).

I thrive on music. Seriously, I go nuts if I don't listen to some music everyday.

I've tried to start a few music threads over the years, but they never really mounted to much. Granted, a couple of those threads were on Godspeed You! Black Emperor and tragically not very many people are familiar with them.

I enjoy music a great deal (jazz, classical, latin, downtempo) but I don't miss a music forum here. I can talk about music at Head-Fi.org.
