Do TrekBBS users listen to music?

I've tried to start a few music threads over the years, but they never really mounted to much. Granted, a couple of those threads were on Godspeed You! Black Emperor and tragically not very many people are familiar with them.

GYBE is one of those bands that should be right up my alley, given a lot of the other stuff I like (I was all about the postrock in the mid- to late '90s), but I've never really connected with their stuff as much as I expected. Could just need to give them another chance.

I enjoy lots of music in many forms such as rock and metal, classical and instrumental, techno and trance, and some jazz. Music is especially great when net surfing.

Currently playing: Fuel-"Won't Back Down"

I thrive on music. Seriously, I go nuts if I don't listen to some music everyday.

Same here. I've got Itunes genius on at the moment, while I do some other stuff which needs tobe done.

How many Radiohead threads have I started over the years?? There was a time when I did a thread or two on a band for that week, to see what people thought of them. Something similar could be done like that, but with an album of the week and see what people think of it.

I find that a lot of the Australian bands I listen, only generally the other Australians have heard of them.

Wow, it's so rare to find someone who has even heard of them (over the years I've only met about half a dozen including the person who introduced me to them). If you do give them another try, check out f#a#(infinity). Simply amazing.

Speaking of them, did you ever listen to any of the sister bands, particularly A Silver Mt. Zion (just one of the many variations of their name)?

Based on your post I gave them a bit of a listen. I heard Sleep, Rockets Fall, and Storm. Is this pretty much what they sound like?

I don't mind the slow build, but where's the payoff? I like the ambient quality of it, but it's more like listening to a soundtrack of a movie I'm not watching. Of those three, I liked Storm the best.

Anyway, I know how you feel. I seem to be the only person in the United States that likes Porcupine Tree. I've only met two other people here who've heard of them. My enthusiasm for their work is a somewhat solitary affair.

What we have in common is a movie and TV series which frankly didn't do much with cutting edge musical scores. And what pop music our heroes listened to never came from our era. Music treads tend to have teenagers to folks around their 60s each talking about the music they like while saying everything else sucks:devil:.

Alas, the same genetic defect that makes Star Trek appear entertaining also precludes the appreciation of music.

I've found most music threads around here just end up being posts of different users saying what music they like, with very little interaction. People usually don't take the time to listen to and then comment on preferences others post, digits' response above being the exception.

Of course, when people do start offering critiques of another's taste in music, things can get ugly. The war between the music connoisseur and the person who just listens to whatever they enjoy without thinking much about it is a brutal and harsh one, and not for the faint of heart.

It's funny, because at the forum I usually read for music discussion Porcupine Tree has come under fire for being too mainstream. But then, they're a bunch of elitist snobs anyway.

Really, I haven't found all that many places for decent, active music discussion. I mean, you have the different artist fan forums or whatnot, but obviously they cater to one fanbase; or you have general sites that only have a couple posts a day. When music discussion happens here, it's usually quite interesting, but it doesn't happen often enough. It doesn't help that there are sometimes threads about music in Misc as well as here. Maybe a music forum would stimulate discussion, I dunno.

I listen to plenty of music, but I can't say I'm really qualified to seriously discuss it.

That can be said about any poster on any subject here! :p ;)

Heheh. Yeah, I'm no expert on the process of writing or producing telvision shows, but that hasn't stopped me from commenting on them.

I think I've heard one of theirs. I know both bands have stuff on emusic, so if I can't find anything around the house, I'll download something (legally and inexpensively).

There was a record store here in Ottawa (the late lamented Organized Sound) that carried a lot of postrock, krautrock, experimental, etc. I was buying a lot of Labradford, Stereolab, Third Eye Foundation, Bowery Electric, and discovering classics by Neu!, Cluster, and Harmonia, among others. (Still listen to it, of course, but these days I'm listening to a lot of dubstep and hiphop and the recent waves of new wave revivalists.)

It's all well and good to say that you can find anything on the Internet -- but you have to know to look for it. Browsing in a record store allows you to discover stuff you didn't even know you needed. Especially when there's a good staff who get to know you, or who notice what you're buying and say hey, have you heard.... But those days seem to be coming to an end.

There's a lot of up and down (in the motion of the music) to their work sometimes with a payoff, sometimes not. f#a#(infinity) tends to have more payoffs than the other albums which is probably why it's my favorite. Also, you listened to two tracks from one album and one track from another and I have to say their music is best enjoyed as albums as a whole, much like Pink Floyd (and is it surprising that they are two of my favorite bands?). Like I suggested to Steve, check out f#a#(infinity) when you get the chance.

A Silver Mt. Zion is lighter in mode than Godspeed and often times features some singing, which is scarce for Godspeed (despite the sharing of band members). Their albums blend a bit more together than Godspeed, but I would recommend checking out either Born into Trouble as the Sparks Fly Upward or This is Our Punk-Rock, Thee Rusted Satellites Gather + Sing (yes, both bands love their long, seemingly nonsensical titles).

If there was a subforum here dedicated to music, I'd certainly post more. I'm sure others would as well.

I remember why I wasn't as keen as expected on GYBE; it's the spoken word stuff on some albums. But I went ahead and downloaded f#a#(infinity) and Yanqui U.X.O. from emusic. I gather the latter doesn't have any voiceovers.

I listen to lots of foreign music, to the extent where I've forgotten some of them; There's two German bands I'm pretty sure (Iron Savior and Silent Force), an English band (Franz Ferdinand), I think that Nightwish and Within Temptation might be based in Sweden, and Eiffel 65 are from Italy. Oh, and Rii...

You have no idea how quickly I'd be banned if I spoke my mind about that comment... I've watched a little bit of every Star Trek series and every movie except the new one, and just look at my comment above. And nobody's been screwing around with my genome that I've noticed.

Correct, the latter is the only album of theirs that doesn't have spoken word. I can understand being put off by that content and I admit that I didn't like it at first, but I love the music itself that I grew to accept it as part of the mood setter.

If you like these guys and Pink Floyd, you should definitely sample some Porcupine Tree, particularly Stupid Dream and Lightbulb Sun. Trippy prog-rock stuff. In later albums they get more metal-y. Next week they're releasing an album that contains one 55 minute song.

Sorry but I'm a real pain to point this out, but Franz Ferdinand are Scottish, not English. :) Still, same island...
