do most fans like into darkness (spoilers)

Re: do most fans like into darkness

The Star Trek reboot is the fast food of the Star Trek universe. Brings in the non trekkie dollars - hey look explosions and shiny things.

Re: do most fans like into darkness

I just saw it. I can't properly express how much I loved it.

Of course, now that I'm back on TBBS (I've been away for a few months because of a shit ton of work), I'll probably learn in excruciating detail how much I hated it. :)

But man, that was a good movie. It did my heart good to see the Star Trek that I remember inspiring me so much as a kid being relevant and exciting again.

Re: do most fans like into darkness

ok so guess what happen. I have always been a big fan of star trek and have watched very episode of original series, next generation, ds9, and all the feature films. With that being said I loved it. Without a doubt this movie is now my favorite star trek movie ( sorry wrath of kahn) my family loved it and parts such as the kahn scream which I was holding my breath for didn't seem that bad. in fact the scream only lasted 2 seconds before the cut to another scene so I dont see the big deal. The only part I did not like was that the villain is khan but I think it worked out good in the end. Also the Kirk death scene was not a copy of the original they added plenty of new dialog and there was only 3 short lines they copied. Lastly the audience greatly enjoyed it and laughed at all the funny parts.

And it doesn't have any of the progressive spirit and grand ideas that used to define Star Trek.
That is a big myth about Trek. There are countless episodes that just told a good story without any morality tale.

I'm not just talking about morality tales, but simple things like the fact that there were a black woman, a Japanese man, and a Russian working together as equals on the bridge of the Enterprise. While TOS was at times sexist or racist by today's standards, it was extremely progressive for its time, even in episodes that didn't have a specific moral agenda.
This, too, is myth accentuated by nostalgia goggles. While it may have been more progressive than a lot of film and television of the era, it was not as much as some--at least not to the extent some white knighters try to make it out to be.

It was also not the driving force of the series.

That said, if you suggest STiD was not politically and philosophically poignant, then you must've seen a different film than I did.

I'm a fairly big fan and thought it was excellent. I want to see it again and again, it has gotten better with every viewing.

The new movie, by comparison, has only two female speaking parts, both of which have gratuitous scenes of them appearing in their underwear (one of them in the last movie, admittedly) and are mostly defined by their relationships to the men in the movie. That's pretty much the opposite of progressive in my opinion. Not to mention that they still haven't managed to include a single LGBT character...

That kind of ends up being Kirk/Spock and Kirk/Spock/McCoy in a round-about way, but I see what you're saying.

So, seeing what felt like the majority of the movie focus on the developing love story between Kirk/Spock,.

The greatest part of the movie for me. Love it.

Exactly.

Re: do most fans like into darkness

After looking at the poles on trek movie and here compared to the 2009 movie it seems like most people liked the movie better. Of course theres the diehard fans who hate the reboot but it seems like most a majority of fans liked into darkness. Please tell me if i am wrong because i am going to see it today.

Go see it yourself and decide. So many people are relying on some really terribly written reviews (like i09, which probably contained about 90% of things that weren't true). If you see it and don't like it, that's fine, but most people do like it. I loved it, and I will honestly say it's my favorite ST movie now (TWOK my second, but sometimes the acting would bother me). I obviously can't speak for your tastes, but I like the fresh blood in it, and it's made me excited for Trek for the first time in over 15 years, when I used to watch it everyday.

Re: do most fans like into darkness

tmosler has seen it and loved it :)

I loved 2009 a lot more but there was also the OMFG element to that because I was so so so wowed by the wonderfulness of the reboot.

This entire reboot of Star Trek is similar to that of James Bond. Producers and directors giving both franchise a new life and a breath of fresh air unlike how it was the last time. Just like the Bond franchise, there are some older fans that do not like the newer Trek movies. For me, I like that they rebooted and revived both Star Trek and James Bond, since honestly, both the movie franchise of Trek and Bond were basically dead a decade ago.

With that, I really enjoyed and love Into Darkness. Star Trek is definitely back, and I hope they will at least go on for the next decade or so with the current cast and crew and hope other directors or producers won't screw it up.
