do most fans like into darkness (spoilers)

After looking at the poles on trek movie and here compared to the 2009 movie it seems like most people liked the movie better. Of course theres the diehard fans who hate the reboot but it seems like most a majority of fans liked into darkness. Please tell me if i am wrong because i am going to see it today.

Re: do most fans like into darkness

Not I.

I would have loved an alternate timeline star trek 'reboot'. However its not really a reboot is it... they clearly show that it was a timeline change at a certain point. So the universe should have remained recognizable, the characters, stories and the future are altered in ways to allow for epic story telling in a new light.

I believe that TV shows and Films, are always better when the characters and stories follow the rules established by a "universe". It helps the viewer immerse themselves in the story telling.

Just go see the movie and don't dwell on what other people think. By the time the credits roll, you should be able to form your own opinion, and that's the only one which really matters.

Good advice. Though I am a fan and I was disappointed in the film. I liked Trek 2009 but this one left me with mixed feelings.

Re: do most fans like into darkness

I'm a huge fan and I loved it. My wife and Mother-in-law are moderate fans and both loved it. My six-year old son loved it.

Re: do most fans like into darkness

From what I've seen, it's mainly the TOS trekkers that are in love with this movie in spite of its many flaws. That's a good thing because it was made for them and with them in mind. Anybody who just wants to see an action movie along the lines of Michael Bay will also be satisfied. Most of the reviews I've read for the film are positive, but even a lot of those have backhanded compliments or a fair bit of criticism thrown in.

I LOVED the 2009 movie, but this one left me cold. There were some things about it I liked, mainly many of the interactions in the film, but the over all story, its execution, and Spock were the main things that killed it for me. Still, you should have your own opinion because you might like it.

Re: do most fans like into darkness

Yes, I liked this movie better than the first one, and I like it better than every previous Trek movie other than perhaps TWOK.

Same here. I loved the first movie, I love the new timeline, I love the new cast, I love the new Enterprise, and I don't even mind the new emphasis on action.....

......but the story for this movie just didn't work for me at all. It's like a bunch of random story ideas and action sequences that were just thrown together in a blender.

Yes, count me as someone who was a big Trekkie but also someone who was a big fan of Trek XI but was very disappointed by Trek XII. It just didn't hold together for me. I do plan on giving it another shot in theaters, but I really walked away from the experience disappointed, when I went in really wanting to - and expecting to - love this movie.

Re: do most fans like into darkness

I've seen it three times so far and might try for a fourth one day next week while the wife's at work!

Re: do most fans like into darkness

It certainly seems like most fans like it quite a bit, which, frankly, baffles me. I do think it's as good as or better than the last one (which I enjoyed a lot) in all technical aspects, but I found the script shockingly inept. It's not boring or anything, just incredibly convoluted, predictable, and stupid. And it doesn't have any of the progressive spirit and grand ideas that used to define Star Trek.

Re: do most fans like into darkness

I really like JJ Trek overall. I think they nailed the characters and tweaked them enough so they have room to grow into the crew we knew. The character interactions are a lot of fun. The only thing I really wish would change, is the design of the Enterprise, it isn't the best looking version we have seen. The use of the brewery for Engineering is another UGH, I thought it was represented better in Into Darkness than in the 2009 film.

To me the movies feel like a season 2 episode of the original series which is fine with me. Trek has gone back to the feel of the original series, and lost the nose in the air attitude from TNG.

That is a big myth about Trek. There are countless episodes that just told a good story without any morality tale.

Re: do most fans like into darkness

I for one thought it was a great movie & plan to see it more as funds allow. I may be the last person to try & convince anyone since I loved Star Trek Enterprise & rolled my eyes at all the negativity surrounding it from fans. There was a lot to love in STID, maybe a few things could have been changed but I go in to a Trek movie to be entertained, not to over analyze it then complain. I do enough of that everyday over gas prices & other bs.

I just hope Paramount doesn't freak out that the thing didn't/won't hit $100 million this weekend.

I'm not just talking about morality tales, but simple things like the fact that there were a black woman, a Japanese man, and a Russian working together as equals on the bridge of the Enterprise. While TOS was at times sexist or racist by today's standards, it was extremely progressive for its time, even in episodes that didn't have a specific moral agenda.
The new movie, by comparison, has only two female speaking parts, both of which have gratuitous scenes of them appearing in their underwear (one of them in the last movie, admittedly) and are mostly defined by their relationships to the men in the movie. That's pretty much the opposite of progressive in my opinion. Not to mention that they still haven't managed to include a single LGBT character...

Re: do most fans like into darkness

I liked it much better than STXI. Better story, much better villain, nuKirk was much better and less annoying in it.

It's up there now among my top three Trek movies. Three and a half stars.

It doesn't baffle me. Why, you may ask? Because I spent about a year on another board with hard-core TOS trekkers, and their love for the Spock/Kirk and Kirk/Spock/McCoy couple/trio supersedes everything else--all logic, science, etc. I'm certainly not saying it's the entire group; I'm just saying from my experience it is a lot of them.

So, seeing what felt like the majority of the movie focus on the developing love story between Kirk/Spock, no matter how forced, how rushed, or implausible at this point in the timeline, especially with all of the homages and copied material from the TOS timeline, just had to be a dream come true and a trip to TOS heaven.

I'm glad that those fans are getting what they want. I just wish the marketing had been clear that this is a movie geared towards TOS fans and that the early interviews (especially with the writers/producers) when the movie was filming had said as much. That way I could have moved on and not wasted any time. Sorry, but that's just how I feel.

This movie wasn't going to be for everyone, and the marketing made it hard to follow exactly what I was in for. I just wish they had been up front about things instead of all the smoke and mirrors surrounding the film and different press saying different things, with some of those things conflicting. Still, I wish them success as they continue onward. Me? I think I'll get around to doing that TNG watch I've been interested in.

Re: do most fans like into darkness

I only have one criticism. I didn't like the Kobiyashi Maru scene in STXI and I don't like the "mirror" Wrath of Khan death scene. Both feel to me like tasteless and badly done fanwank that frankly brought me out of the story. Especially Kirk's death scene in this movie, it just felt like the writers were more interested in showing off how smart they are by incorporating scenes from Wrath of Khan rather than write a good story.

Re: do most fans like into darkness

The polls speak for themselves, as do the reviews. It's just that those who didn't like it let us know again and again.

And again.
