DLP vs. Traditional

I have a choice between going to a digital or a tradition projection. Which do people here prefer? I've never seen a film in DLP, so just curious what everyone's thoughts are on it.

I heard its like watching it on a theater size HDTV. I wanted to try it out for thursday, but advance tickets aren't available for that format.

The theatre by me that's DLP is a shithole with non-stadium, uncomfortable seating. Hopefully the one near you is better.

I saw "Watchmen" there and then in a traditional theatre. I really didn't notice a huge difference. Of course you don't have the little scratches and dust you'd get at a traditional theatre, but to be honest, it's never gotten to the point where it was that distracting.

DLP theater is fine, I really don't see a difference but then I always pretty much sit in the same spot in the theater so I cannot say how well it does on the fringe areas.

DLP TV on the other hand, imo, is shit.

The only real difference i noticed between DLP and regular is that the regular movies sometimes have those scratches and blotches that appear on the screen when your watching it. DLP doesn't have that.

At the end of the day though, IMAX is the way to go 8 )

IMDb lists the digital intermediate for Star Trek as 2K resolution, a hair bigger than 1080p. If I had the choice I'd be avoiding a digital theater for this film.

If you are watching this movie this week, go traditional. The film prints will still be nice and new.

However, when you are seeing it for the 15th time (like I know we all will) in July, go DLP.

I dislike digital projections. I see banding and colour jaggies, especially in deep tones and darks. Actual film is crisply sharp when projected well. Hell, you could project it onto the Moon and it would still be watchable.

Digital has serious resolution issues, always had. They have accomplished amazing things but good old film is STILL the winning technology. Just cause somethings old...

The IMAX theater I'll be seeing it at IS a DLP theater.

I have a Samsung DLP (62") at home and, personally -- I think it's great! It uses LEDs. Plasmas are overrated and don't hold up well over time.

Honestly, there is no perfect solution with regard to home theaters. Each one has it's pros and cons -- it's a matter of what you can and can't live with.

Anyway, I'll be in front of that DLP IMAX screen at the AMC theater Friday night!
