District 9

I THINK this started out as an indy film years ago. The guy who is directing it was pegged to be the director for the Halo movie, and a short film of his was making the rounds back then. I actually checked it out and it looked really cool. Imagine my surprise when I saw said indy film in a more evolved form as a trailer for a new movie. I had to do a double take at first lol

I've seen the trailer and read the background material on it... I think it's got potential. That said, it can go one of two ways: if it devolves into a sentimental parable about the evils of racism, it'll fail. If it merges the obvious xenophobia angle into an overarching story with a point, it'll do well.

I was in Santa Monica this weekend and there were posters all over the place for this. They were kind of creepy because they were made to look like actual propaganda posters from the film as opposed to promotional pieces. It made the area look like a shot from the opening sequence to Alien Nation.

release date /expected box office performance

Just watched the trailer. I'd like to see it since it is in the science fiction genre.

Unfortunately Tristar Pictures felt it will not be a good performer money-wise and have decided to release it in the month of August.
In general August and January are the times to release bad movies to theaters.
Like the last three weeks of August. It is a time when college kids and, well, kids in general, go back to school. Families usually start to develop an allergy to blockbusters, having already been bombarded for three months by the studio’s best summer efforts. Not wanting to waste their more promising efforts on a weak month, studios used August as a dumping ground.

Peter Jackson is involved in this project, I think he helped get it funded after working with him on the initial halo movie prep back in the day.

Yeah, I still think this is the concession they made after the Halo movie failed.
"Well, lets make take your 10 minute film and make it a 2 hour epic". We'll see how it goes.
