Dissidia Final Fantasy

Sephiroth

Vice Admiral
Admiral
Today I got this little gem for the PSP, the 10 heros and villans from the first 10 FF games are summoned to battle it out for the side of good and evil, after a few hours of play I have to admit that this game is a definate step up from Ehrgeiz (Square's last attempt at a fighting game) but not by much.

Instead of direct attack commands you have an attack that damages your enemies HP and an attack that damages his Bravery, weakening your enemies bravery lessens the ammount of damage he does.

The stages, based around areas in the previous 10 FF games, are very elaborate and well made, but are a pain in the ass, they are too large for 1 on 1 fighting (the only kind) and the charaters are too slow in relation to the levels.

Story mode (the first part atleast) is comprised of each charater going through his/her own 5 sets of chessboard like levels with fights and treasures, fun, right? nope there is a move counter in the corner and whenever you do an action, it clicks down by one, dropping the end of level bonus, and it is damned hard to beat a level before the counter reaches 00 and near impossible to come out ahead.

i'll add on more when I have had more time to play through it

Yeah. That game sucks.

But then, it's I Final Fantasy game made after 1996. What did you expect?

Hmmm, I think it's the spin-offs and direct sequels to the main series that are of a lower quality. I personally love VII, VIII, IX, X and XII (haven't played XI). Also, the GBA ports of IV, V and VI were a perfect fit for the handheld console.

The only good thing about this game is its soundtrack. It has some BEAUTIFUL remakes of some of the older tunes.

So far, I've finished 6 of the character missions so far - at least, of the list that you get after the prologue.

(I still have the Warrior of Light, the Onion Knight, Bartz and Terra to go through before I want to click on the Dark Mission Card Of Doom.)

So far, I really, really, really like this game. Between going step-by-step through the Story Mode while trying to bottle up EX breaks, stacking up on points for the PP Catalog in Arcade Mode, or honing one-on-one skills in Quick Battle mode, there's a nice range of paces to change back and forth to. (I don't seem to have unlocked Tiger... err, Duel Colosseum yet, though.)

However, I find that when it comes to unlockables, I'm somewhat divided. On the one hand, getting alternate costumes and some of the extras is a no-brainer. Cloud looks cool in the Advent Children gear, though I haven't use his alternate EX mode with it yet. Squall's got perhaps the coolest alternate so far, with the military dress uniform on offer.

However, aside from Sephiroth (who I unlocked as soon as I could, because it's, well, Sephiroth!) I am in no hurry to unlock the other bad guys, unless I have to later on. While there are a few plot points that seem interesting so far, I can'y look at any of the other Chaos-ites and say 'yes, I want to go ahead and unlock him/her/it.'

Of the ones I have unlocked, I really like the sheer variety in terms of play styles. I'm still trying to get a feel for which one I like the style of best, but we'll see.

Character-wise, however, Squall is just plain cool! As is his English voice - done by Doug Erholtz. He is a great matchup against Sephiroth, too - just like in the opening movie. God, I hope you get to actually play out a fight like that in story mode later on...

Also, I love the little things they add in. Things like the Chocobo dance they play during the data install, or the ability to export replay movies into AVI format onto your Memory Stick (it even sets up a specific folder for you, so you don't have to create one yourself!) - that kind of easter egg-iness and attention to detail is the kid of thing that I really appreciate.

So, all in, this game is fantastic - and go Squall!

EDIT: Wow, I seem to be in something of a minority on this one. To paraphrase a certain fictional prosecutor, I seem to have a singular interest so far...

Meh. I'm not that impressed with them. There's plenty of better Remixes of pretty much every song on there on the various gazzillion Final Fantasy albums.

Fighting games don't really interest me, but this one has piqued my interest. Any game with Kefka is fine by me.

Have you even played this game, or are you just predisposed to hating anything released after your personal favorite FF?

Somewhat unrelated, but I've been playing the new PSP port of FF VII (I missed it the first time around). Fantastic game - it really holds up for its age, and it plays surprisingly well on the handheld. I can see why it was such a legendary game.

Got Dissida.....wow...not scamwow wow, just wow. This game is a defenite Gem for the PSP( not saying much though )
Sure it's a Fighting Game. It's not as amazing as Street Fighter IV, but it's defenatly not as horrendus as King of Fighters X!!. If you cant deal with the Fighting Aspect they do offer an Old School Command System just to make it easier, hopefully.
Other than that, the game is deep, I've already unlocked all the (22) characters, hence I've completed all of the story mode, and then some.

I'm currently maxing out my Tidus, Best Fighter on the heroes side, although Exdeath and Golbez player do give me troubles. Oh and my Tidus is Lvl 83, My second is Bartz, Lv 23:lol:

^crap, I've only just gotten the third crystal mission done (got hung up on Cecil's quest) now I'm grinding all my charaters up to level 20 before I do any more of the story mode
