Dispatches from the Non-Genre Press...

I knew it was the Trek trailer simply by virtue of having read the descriptions of it beforehand, but I was sitting with a couple of people who hadn't read the descriptions and didn't know what it was until "My name is James Tiberius Kirk!"

I'm really not surprised by the approach they took to the trailer, though. From one of my own posts back in August:

I expect it to start out looking nothing like a trailer for a Star Trek movie or, necessarily, even a sci-fi film. There are parts of this movie that are supposed to take place in relatively mundane settings back on Earth and so forth. At some point, though, just when people are starting to sit forward in their seats and ask, "What the heck is this?" the screen will go black for a few moments and then WHAM! The trailer switches into high gear with lots of epic space shots and otherworldly vistas interspersed with intriguing little exchanges of dialogue that hint at the basic storyline. It all builds to a crescendo which will probably include at least one jaw-droppingly amazing but brief glimpse of the Enterprise herself and at least one dramatic reveal of Leonard Nimoy as Spock. Probably there will also be something with Nero, maybe right at the end to finish on an exciting but slightly sinister note. Black screen. Fade in delta shield emblem. Fade in release date.

I was wrong about Leonard Nimoy making an appearance but I scored pretty well on the rest, I think. ;)

Anybody else think it was a Trek trailer at that point?

Yes, most of us did. Because we already knew what to expect from the trailer thanks to the numerous spoiler reports days before the trailer was shown.

I think this movie will make $200 million worldwide easily just based on curiosity alone. That plus the massive DVD sales of probably 3 different versions, will all help make this film profitable.
It will easily hit 700 million world wide like the other Franchise piece Orci and Kurtzman were involved with last year and people continue to badmouth for it's success. And they didn't even need to put flames on Kirk's Tunic.

Peter The Younger said:
Yes, I'm sure they looked at the Enterprise and thought, "This looks just like that movie about giant robots written by Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman, who suck!"

Come on. Please.

Yeah it REALLY Sucked.. It Sucked so good that I CAME... Really the Transformers movie was pretty good for a popcorn action flick about robots that change form and come to earth to continue their battle... Which is all Transformers ever was.. Hot Robot on Robot action with humans in the mix....

I remember reading that post. You were amazingly accurate!

^ Indeed. That's quite impressive, Vektor.

Didn't you know that we're all plants from the studio??
I don't know what you're talking about.

Well i see it this way. The movie will probably be the highest grossing film in trek history easily. But thats not really say anything being the only trek movie to gross over 100million was trek 4. Being the budget is 150million not including promotion im guessing. Thats going to be hard to beat in the domestic box office. Im guessing the movie will make at least 100mil to 150mil in domestic box office and maybe at least 50mill to 100mil in the international box office. So that is pretty good if it can do that. That is not including of course the dvd sales and rentals. Odviously i am guessing all this. I can be totally wrong, who knows.

You guys' Trek-fu obviously outclasses my own at this point. I had NO IDEA what it was going to be about, not even in the slightest.
